That's what I was thinking. But still...there's always the comforts of the hotel vs. the disturbances of the lot. If you've ever been to lot 3 at Alpental, you'd understand.

When I here camper I see something that goes on the back of a pickup. A good winterized camper can easily set you back $30-$40K. Plus you'll need a 1T pickup to haul it.
If I was in a family way I would consider buying a chalet/condo on a family ski hill somewhere. I have no idea if that's possible down in WA. Up here prices have gone insane. In any case, the chalet will go up in value unlike a camper. The down side is you'll be limited to one hill.
An EarthRoamer starts at around $100,000.

Grow fins.
As sleek and chasky as an Airstream is, the nickels add up fast even before you buy the sled to drag that thing up a snowy access road and park it.

Sorry, they now start at $181,000.

My parents just sold a 10 year old Class C motorhome - 28' and winter ready for about ca$25k. There's a bunch of those on lots around here for about that price in really good condition. Lots of people around Calgary right now with too much money, so smaller units are selling dirt cheap due to everyone upgrading.
I used it to ski a couple of times, it was sweet.
here you go B- A whole setup:

FOR SALE: '75 8' std, VG cond on '91 Dodge D350 Cummins dually
Recently bought the camper and put it on the truck I have owned for years. Makes a great over-the-road combination.
The truck: 1991 Dodge D350 dually. Cummins 5.9 liter turbo diesel. White. Std cab. Manual trans. 17+ mpg!!! 202k miles. Runs well. Very reliable. Some light rust.
The camper: 1975 Alaskan 8' std. Serial # 775041323. Interior i VG cond; recently reupholstered; good orig tile floor; cabinets in VG cond; blonde wood--very bright inside.
Ext in fair to good cond. Dings in roof. Could use paint. Hydraulics work fine. Never hooked up electrics or propane. Have orig owner's manual!
This camper looks like it was made for this truck. Will post pictures soon. Asking $5750 for both. Must sell. New Sportsmobile on order. Thanks for looking.

(from: http://www.alaskancamper.net/ ) they are reputed among the best of slide ins ~20K new (need to add some options of course). Used good shape diesel P/U to toss it into ~9-15K. They're located in Chehalis, WA. Actually, the fact that it is a '75 should tell you that these things are built to last.
Otherwise, even a regular popup camper (with the canvas sides) are warm b/c they have furnaces. The more I think about it the more I think the idea of getting you totally styled out for about 25K is possible. On the trailer front while you could do well, driving in the winter towing a big ass trailer in the mountains = suck ASS.

I guess all the sled heads hauling their gargantuan toy haulers slash camp trailers and staying multiple nights in the snowmobile parking areas didn't get that memo. I mean they do it, so why can't a regular camp trailer be pulled safely? Put some studs on a dual axle 16-18 foot trailer and you should be money. That is what I am wrestling with, slide in camper or a "butt hut". I like the idea of being able to unhook and run around without a camper weighing me down. disclosure, there are three large snowmobile parking areas withing 4 miles of my base mountain and there are always 'bilers camping out of their toy haulers. that is what started me thinking going the butt hut route.Originally Posted by lemon boy
I'm reading more like $40k. But anyway, I'm still on the fence about it.Originally Posted by lemon boy

How about this:

Upstairs: sleeping quarters
Downstairs: kitchen, beer fridge, ski workshop, etc
Bonus: impossible to lose your car in the parking lot ever again
Ah, thanks, but no.Originally Posted by El Chupacabra

ummmm assgrass: I never said it was unpossible, I said it was suck ass. Big difference.
Dragging a trailer up to one of the snowiest places on earth = super double suck ass. Also, buster is unlikely to sink 60K++++ into building a super duper unstoppable tow truck.
Also, if you get stands for a slide in you can just drop those and drive off should you need.
buster, set aside 40K and be set to swoop up a good deal.

Buster,
Let go in on an A-frame in the foothills of Methland. It will be a multigenerational stinkhole, alternately known as Paradise. Hopefully we can find something that comes with a nonfunctional el Camino permanently parked in the front yard.

PNWBrit - Kindly thanks...perhaps we'll take you up on that. But we'd like to get something more regular established.
Yo Greydon. A one room rustic cabin in Groinwater will run about $250k. A bit much methinks...despite the lawn ornaments.

Interesting thread.
Family vacation each year to Steamboat. 2 adults / 2 kids. (1995 - 2001)
Flight Cincinnati to Steamboat - RT.
Shuttle Airport Cinti - RT.
Shuttle Airport Stmbt - RT.
8 nights at Rabbit Ears in 1 room w/ 2 queen beds.
2 adult 6 day passes w/ kids ski free.
6 - Full day lessons - 3 days for each kid.
Breakfast included at Rabbit Ears.
Picnic lunch on the slopes
Dinner out each night.
20 - 28 tickets (apres-ski for family) Stmbt Rec Center (pools and hot springs).
Always used the Stmbt bus system to slopes and in town (no rental car)
Averaged around 800.00 - 850.00 per person. 8 x 4 = 32
3,200 x 10 years = $32,000.00
Cheaper than an RV and no maintenance.
May only be a down-payment on a 2 bdrm condo. (add monthly payment, maint. fees, taxes, rental agency fees, etc.)
bottomline: 7 - 10 day ski vacation always seems to run about 800 - 1,000 / person.
That's the analysis I run across. It actually seems cheaper to just blow 4-5 k/year on a hotel room.

There's a romantic analysis and there's the economic. Romantically, the RV is way cool and closer to my old "style", whatever that was. But the reality is that life changes and there's a bunch of other poo to consider, like the basic economics of it.
The Camper wins in the romantic category. But is it really cheaper and better? My jury is still debating.

it is cheaper if you use it a lot. Just have to set your goals accordingly.

Other than family, what about the (poor) student? How many people sleep in the car? For 1 night, maybe 2?
I was thinking this might be a good way to beat I-70 traffic to and from Denver. Stay the night and come back Mon morning. Anyone know a good place near A-basin, Vail, etc...
you mean like the parking lot at the basin?
