Thumbs up Patrick O'Brian Aubrey/Maturin books

Damn these books are good! I read the first three in the series, then took a break to read a couple other books over the summer, now I'm back at it with The Mauritius Command. If you think historical fiction about a Napoleanic Era British sea captain and his ship's surgeon sounds boring, think again.

The movie Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World was based on (a couple of) these books. I thought the movie was good, but pales in comparison with the books.

    Highly recommended.

Dammit, I thought this was going to be this Pat OBrien:

    He's The Insider.

I read 'em all start to finish one summer. I'm a huge fan of the books. It took me about 5 books to catch half of the subtleties and the humor. Incredible writing and stories.

AD and Cornholio give the A/M books:
    It's idomatic, beatch.

Yeah I've read 'em all too. The last few books tail off just a bit imo, but the series as a whole is stellar.

Bumping this because I finally finished the whole series last night. I took my time, obviously. I'll agree with iceman that the last few book do tail off a little.

I'm going to miss Aubrey and Maturin

I was really sad when I finished the series too, a few years ago. I tried Horatio Hornblower but it wasn't the same.
