    Fox Talas Vanilla RL

I just bought a bike with a FoX Talas Vanilla RL rear shock. Being the bike jong that I am I try to change the rear shock adjustment from the the full extention to the -1/4" or -1/2" and nothing seems to happen. I looked at the owners manual and it states that if you change the adjustment and then compress the shock the shock length should shorten by ether 1/2 or 1/4. As far as I can tell it doesnt seem to work. Also was wondering if I could use my own pump (or do I need a fox shock specific pump) to adjust the air pressure in the shock. Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated. Word.
