Dumb beacon question

Okay, this may be the weirdest question yet asked about avy beacons BUT I'd like tp practice a few drills but don't live within a bazillion miles of any snow. I DO however have family on a 16-mile beach. As long as the beacon was properly wrapped in a poly bag or something would it be theoretically possible to do the drills in the sand dunes?

don't see why not.

I'd recommend a heavy duty tupperware container that seals well, with about a 50cm by 50cm patch of discarded carpet attached to the lid, so you have something slightly larger to "hit" while probing, digging, etc.

just make damn sure the person hiding the beacon has it turned on and transmitting!

Nothing wrong with that at all, you can even hide it in the yard without burying it to get a good idea on how to search with your beacon. Any practice is better than no practice. For your situation make sure it's high tide when you bury it.

You could also try searching in your front yard with a blind fold usiing the audio. I've done lots of practice in an empty lot next to my house with tall grass grown up, using a dark colored bag nestled in some brush. I have also gotten people to hide them in the house. Bottom line is any practice will help you, no matter where or how you do it.

The good thing about the beach is that you can bury it. The 3rd dimension makes thing a LOT harder.

The wife and I were practicing on the little mtn adjacent to Andermatt last year and it freaked her out how much harder it was to be buried only 2-3 feet (1 meter for you ROO ) under.

Sand is my preferred off season training medium!
I like the tall grass green bag idea - good one.
Don't forget to orient the beacon different ways, e.g. standing up straight or standing up at an angle will give varying flux lines.
The problem with the desk drawer is how funky the flux lines seem since the "victim" is at the same level and to the side of you.

For digital beacon users, the Couloir mag articles on searching in the vertical plane are very cool and helpful for a final pinpoint location.
