WTB: MTB, Medium, inexpensive but functional, VT or nearby NE

Kid going to college in VT - would like a modest MTB to ride around campus but that can also handle the local trails.
Has a nice bike here at home but no way she's taking that out there to get ripped off or destroyed.
Medium frame for five-seven rider, FS preferred, HT considered. More trail/xc than enduro.
Any VT (or nearby) mags got something inexpensive but functional?

If you haven't yet, maybe cross-post in Sprocket Rockets. Also check Pinkbike, MTBR, and Facebook Marketplace if no one hear knows of anything suitable.

I'm gonna be selling my old Yeti 575 size M very very soon, for very little money. But you need to get it from Colorado to the northeast.
