Fucking loose profession indeed, fucking lead guy forgets to charge the batteries in the Total station so we have to keep hitting up the block heaterplugs at the Cat dealer to get enough juice to finish the job but actulay he wasnt the worst cuz he never tried to kill me

I worked with this crazy fucking communist frenchman ( but good at auto cad) whom I would get into a screaming match with every day, fucking idiot does something on the total station and erases 3 days of work

but that is nothing cuz the next job after laying out the new shitters at Red Chris mine buddy falls asleep at 60 MPH and the next thing i wake up to the bottom of the ditch going by at 60mph, only 6 inches from my face which i still remember vividly, the bosses brand new tacoma pitch poles on a culvert in that ditch and does a 180 in the air, its cloudy out so when I crawl out the window so I am totally disoriented I have NO idea which way is north or south or any fucking where

I get a ride back with the towtruck driver towing the bosses totaled brand new Tacoma, i realize tow truck buddy trys to convert every crash victim to jesus, calling the boss to tell him the truck is totalled was rough

The cheapest surveyer was 550 a day at that time and the most expensive was a BCLS surveyor who was 700 a day whom I have also worked for SO IME if there is one thing I learned IF I was getting survey work done I would pay the 700 for the BCLS guys who in BC had the license to layout lots

They were extremly sharp always showed up to work with the best gear always in the best shape and they were never lost in their total station

When I was on the fire team up in the Santa Cruz mountains, there were a couple of places we were likely to stay away from. One was some local's property, Ben Chirco, he made the news once, crazy mother fucker. We wouldn't go near that fuckers place without the sheriff leading the way and they even didn't want to go near him.

The other was up in Last Chance, an off-grid community behind a gate way back there. They didn't like strangers, and the government even less, and the government included us. If we had to go back there and got a bad vibe, we were okay with saying fuck it and leaving. Watch you place burn, we didn't care.

There was some really sketch places up around Boulder Creek I would be nervous about, but that was a different team's area so they had to deal with that situation, not us.

Lol, there have been a bunch of times a bust on the original survey caused my civil plans to be wrong once the contractor triedto build it. Good surveyors are worth their weight in gold... there have also been a bunch of times a particular surveyor saved my ass because he caught a bust in my plans as he was staking it and gave me a call to ask/suggest how it should be fixed (this particular surveyor is a Padded Seat regular).

Its not unheard of for a misteak to have been made somewhere in the past and up here an engineer is not the same as a BCLS SO more important that saving a couple hundred on a cheaper "surveyor " IMO you wana make sure what you think you are buying is actualy what you are buying, or that you aren't building your house on your neighbors property, the survey is where you wana make sure so pay the bucks for the pro

When the Tahoe area was first surveyed they mostly relied on natural features to describe boundaries, apparently most of which cannot be identified today. The general consensus is that the surveying was mostly done from a bar in Truckee. This became an issue with the Palisades gondola and where the Wilderness Boundary is.

I surveyed for years. Engineers make mistakes too. I would much rather call them and get a fix if possible then tear down the station to work that project later. Saves you and me both a lot of time and money.
