    Jaws Turns 50

6/20/1975, just a bit before my time but it's been a part of every summer ever since.

    A true masterpiece.

Here's to 50 years since the greatest drunk fisherman character got eaten by a mechanical shark and kept people out of the water for decades to come.

I still call it The Jake.

Fuck that makes me feel old.

I was 7 when this came out and saw it in the movie theater (the Londonderry movie theater, if you must know, but there was no soup involved). I was just a little too young, methinks.

I was afraid to swim in a pond after that!

My parents took my older sister and me when it opened and when we got inside there were no seats together (just singles) so my 8 year old ass got to see it alone sitting next to some lady that I think was alone and grabbed me a couple times in fright hehe

2-1/2 years before my time, but I remember all through my younger childhood, Peter Benchley would always come over to my grandparents house to hang out, shoot the shit and have a few beers or cocktails with my grandpa. From what I remember he was a super nice guy.

Growing up on Nantucket, for some reason, the movie never gave me any fear of swimming in the ocean.

The boating accident coroner in Jaws is great character. As in people who deny vaccines save lives are like the boating accident coroner in Jaws.

Apparently the actress that played the mom tells the story of stopping at a restaurant in NE and there was an Alex Kintner sandwich on the menu. The kid that played the part owned the restaurant so a nice unexpected reunion lol

I still think this is the greatest horror movie ever made. It had a significant impact on the tourist economies of beach towns everywhere, what other horror movie had that kind of impact?

I’ve read that the War of the Worlds inciting hysteria was mostly marketing bs and not reality. Jaws on the other hand made me and my friends worried about sharks being in swimming pools. SWIMMING POOLS

Not quite the same impact, But 4 years later there was Alien. I think Alien is better and even more terrifying. I was 6 and 10, respectively, when those were released. I didn't get to see them until I was about 11 or 12, iirc. Jaws made me afraid of dark water, but Alien made me afraid of the dark.

Aliens was better than Alien. And neither came close to the impact of Jaws.

My nephew makes horror movies as a job. During the lockdown he created a mashup of horror movie clips. A clip of Mayor Vaughn on the beach Jaws was included.https://youtu.be/QUdV7Xf9sT4?si=DAgx7MCJ9ZZGiziS&t=91

I grew up on the Cape and swam in the ocean every day of the summer until that movie came out. Hardly ever after that. Nope. Nuh-uh.

A guy I know lived on the Vineyard back then and he was one of the local crew that built and sank (over and over and over) the Orca. They had all kinds of problems and there were many many takes. Hes amusing on the subject.

Im another one who saw it when it came out. Theres been many times out in the water in some sharky spots that music would start playing in my head.

Alien was much more scary in the theater. But my girlfriend and I were HAF when we saw it and that might have had something to do with it.

Oh, and Hooper was a dick who boned Chief Brodys wife in the book and deserved to get eaten.
