North Carolina trails after the hurricane?

How are Ashville, Brevard, all western NC bike trails gonna be mid-summer? Washed out and full of downed trees or GTG? Bagtagley, I know its a long shot but when I know exact dates I will see if you can meet up with us, that would be fun to ride again.

The rides I’ve done have been clear, but I’ve only done small, front-side stuff since the hurricane. Lower Black and Sycamore in Pisgah and Corn Mill Shoals area and Ridgeline in DuPont. My understanding is that they’ve opened most major trails back up since the hurricane, but the fires could change that. I’m heading down there today and will try to ask around.

Yeah, holler man. Would be great to ride with you again. Feels like it’s been a lifetime.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

I’m heading down to visit and ride with a buddy in AVL in a few weeks. I’ll let ya know. He’s pretty tapped in to the trail scene around there(on the SORBA Board as of a few months ago)
It sounds like people got the trees cut out of most things, but there are some big washouts that annihilated some trails.

It’s gonna depend on where you want to ride. Pisgah riding, sounds like South Mills River is pretty rough and Trace Ridge/Spencer Gap requires some creative navigation. There’s still some work to be done in DuPont but I wasn’t familiar enough with the stuff the guy was mentioning to be of use. Joe’s beta will be helpful as there’s a ton of riding down there and the folks I talked to could only speak to what they’re familiar with. They’re also working their asses off down there so what’s closed today could be open next week. Couldn’t hurt to ask around and check the apps when you get there. I’ve always had good luck with the folks at The Hub for Pisgah info.

I tend to stick to the common Pisgah rides near Davidson River Campground (Bennet, Avery, Lower Black) and all that stuff was good. Also didn’t have any trouble at DuPont riding from Corn Mill Shoals and Lake Imaging parking lots. Kanuga and Rock Creek are fully open, rad, and IMO worth the price of entry.

Thanks guys! This trip is happening because my kids are going to summer camp close to Brevard. Usually I know what I'm getting myself into before I decide on a bike destination/trip but this time I have no idea what we want to ride or what the good trails.

Got back on Monday. Seemed like everything is good to go. We rode a bunch around Bent Cr/Mills (Trace and Spencer were a go - also lots of social trails), the Brevard stuff - Blacks/Avery/Bennett were all good. And down by Boone/ Wilson Cr zone.
Yeah man, there is a shit ton of awesome riding, I wouldn’t worry about it. The jungle will be in full effect. It’s so rad there, incredible forests, great dirt, super fun trails. Get stoked. It’s veeerrrry different than out west.

Depends what part of the West you are talking about! Rain comes at different months of the year and the soils are more prone to erosion in the Blue Ridge, but in many ways it’s kind of like what you’d get if the PNW had 80-90% humidity midsummer. My first time in the Davidson zone I was kind of surprised how similar it was to here. Related evidence to support my claim, Oregon and NC produce something like 60% of all the Christmas trees in the US, which are primarily grown in the mountains between Portland/Oakridge and north of Asheville.

Anyways that’s really heartening to hear that the trail inventory was resilient to the hurricane. I hope folks in town keep getting what they need to recover and “build back better,” for lack of better and less politically charged words.
