Hi crew, Unfortunately, water has gotten into the core of my Voile SuperCharger touring skis and they are now massively base-high and the toe piece tore out a few days ago, so I'm on the hunt for the next pair. I've found I like skis with stiff tails, a poppy and energetic feel, and that are pretty directional. I really like my Dynastar M-Pro 99's as my daily drivers. They feel snappy, poppy (rebounding out of turns and moguls), but are mounted fairly directionally. My SuperChargers have been my only touring skis so far. They're great in soft snow, a bit rough on firm. But from some other reviews, seems like they also are quite stiff in the tails. They're a bit chattery on icy or firm conditions and tend to get knocked around a bit, but I don't think I want to go much heavier than they are (haven't been able to find a review that lists the weight from my specific model year, but current ones are about 1600g).
Two main skis that I'm considering Dynastar M-Tour 108 - From reviews, they sound like they ski similar to the M-Tours, though in a lighter package. I like the M-Pro's and from reading reviews, sounds like M-Tours have a lot of the same characteristics (energetic, stiff tails, directional) while still being very lightweight. Voile Charger ACE - Similar in shape to the SuperChargers, love the all-white topsheet. Slightly lighter than the SuperChargers, but the new construction makes it a damper ride (supposedly). They come in a bit heavier than the M-Tours, but lighter than what I'm currently used to.
Anyone have experience they can speak to on either of them? Is there anything else I should consider in that 100-108 waist width, a good do-it-all for CO conditions?
Quick about me: 6'2", 185lbs, expert skier. Really enjoy my Dynastar M-Pro 99's. They're lively, poppy, energetic, and flickable. I also enjoy my 2018 Voile SuperChargers, but looking to see if another ski solves some of the things I don't like. I tour with 2022 Atomic Hawx Ultra XTD's and have Salomon MTN pin bindings.
I like my Hyperchargers, and if you loved Super you'll like them with the lighter weight. As I've tried some more skis with a surfier feel, I think that's the main disadvantage of the Charger models; they're pretty locked in with a traditional shape and a lot of sidecut. So they kind of suffer with breakable crust or if you want to throw slashes in denser snow.
I have no personal experience but sounds like you would agree with the Atomic Backland 107. Between the options you mentioned you probably can't go wrong, so just buy the best price or deal you can find. Touring skis just get beat up and in a couple seasons you'll be itching for something newer or shinier.
I have some circa 2012 Voile Chargers (181cm, 112mm waist, 1870g flat [gasp! that's heavy, heavier than my 186cm Volkl BMT122]) and they still ski exceptionally well for my style which prefers more traditional shapes and mount points. Unlike the above posters, I find them surfy and playful when sized in a touring length. The extra weight on the old ones makes them ski variable snow or chop quite well at the expense of skinning efficiency. If you have the option between an extra 100-200g of weight in the ski or the binding definitely use that weight in the ski and pair with a race binding or race-plus.
I have 20+ days on the Charger Ace. Go to touring ski for settled. Way more versitile than the hyper version. The dampening allows a wider selection of turn radius. They do get knocked around in variable snow, more so than the super, but they handle firm smooth snow well.
