    Bluesky

How many have converted over to this one?

It pretty interesting and takes a bit to figure out imo and I'm still not close to completely understanding it's capabilities.

I've been over since basically the election but it's kind of boring (or maybe I'm bad at following people). A bunch of libs in an echo chamber isn't doing it for me

Yeah, I'm with you. I stopped following the "big" names as those just show up in "discover". So my "following" is small and content where I know the person or just interesting and not about politics. The "feeds" are what has potential I think. Again, idk shit but I like the model of being in control as opposed to some algorithm taking over.

I was never on Twitter. So I doubt I'll join Bluesky. However, I think it is extremely dangerous that the right wing assholes took over what was once a useful tool for government agencies and public service institutions to communicate important information to the public.

I have not joined because I've been able to use the search function (!) to find anything I want without logging in. Where xitter made that impossible, bluesky has gone the other way and made it easy for non-members to get info there.

I don't go looking for political stuff there, either, and if I had my choice I'd rather see Mastodon take off, but in terms of platform function bsky seems the best thing going (maybe easier since x lowered the bar, but still).

I have made a lot of noise complaining over the years when public service information is not available outside these stupid apps (and have been successful in many cases). Complete bullshit to communicate important public information through private parties regardless of who is in charge. If they want to push it out using those channels, fine, but it should not be the source.

No, I haven’t clicked a link yet. I let the news outlets to the work of screening all the information.

So when TGR blows this forum up Bluesky may have the tools to create a new TGR home. Need some tech bros to figure that shit out. Being open source it appears to have endless possibilities.

    So, a "private" fork?

A year ago Mastodon seemed to have a lead in that respect as a collection of wholly owned servers, so set up a co-op and go. But bsky seems a lot more more user-friendly.

Super annoying that if I want to view tweets for an ongoing emergency like a wildfire evacuation I have to have an account on X to not see some random post from years ago.

I've got a Bluesky account and have followed a few folks (mostly from this forum) but have barely dipped my toe into it on the reg.

I'm on Bluesky but I admit I mostly use it to follow politics and other non skiing issues. I dropped my X right after the election like millions of others so Bluesky is a replacement. It isn't as good for Ukraine war news, but it is good enough.

I usually just share stuff for myself, not much of my own content posted. I don't really have many original thoughts these days and have never really known how to use these kinds of accounts to follow friends who share non political interests (though everything is related to politics). Threads seems better at that.

That being said, as a Twitter replacement, it is coming along pretty well.

I follow mostly scientists, academics, and journalists. A lot related to weather, wildfire, disasters, climate, and public health/medicine. I have not explored lists, starter packs, and feeds, but I believe they can be used to focus what you’re viewing, and perhaps to interact with specific user groups or friends.

Yeah, I'm following a few feeds like mountain biking, skiing, snowboarding , etc., and they're ok. A little more specific or a tighter group would maybe be more interesting. It appears you can make one, I just haven't explored doing so and I'm not sure I'm tech bro enough to do it anyway.

I am just going to assume D-Mac Ottawa is the kid I rode a 24hr mountain bike race with back in the nineties.
