Has anyone applied for their Italian Citizenship? (Jure Sanguinis)

a coworker and their family (parents and sibling) got their Italian citizenship several years ago. They didn’t have all the paperwork and had to be “adopted” by a village and live there for several weeks.

My personal story is that several great uncles/aunts (first gen American born) went to Italy and Sicily to find their extended families and could not find anybody that shared their name by spelling. I think this was in the 1980’s. They never figured out why their father changed the spelling and had cousins nearby (same name spelling- their fathers immigrated together) that had experienced the same problem. The oldest aunt’s birth certificate (born in Colorado) has a different spelling than their younger siblings. Their mother (my great grandmother) was a very young bride shipped off to the states, and they think it was just a mistake made at the hospital.

When my wife looked into the possibility of citizenship this summer, she found about $5k per person.

Sadly my in-laws are one generation too far removed to get Irish citizenship. I could make aliyah to Israel, but somehow not that inclined to do so at the moment.

Lots of name changes on my mom's (greek) side, plus my grandfather being born in Asia Minor are making my case complicated, but after trumps display today, we got to get out of here before everyone locks the doors to Americans.

A friend has been looking closely at Spain (grandparents immigrated). He’s been told that it’s a [emoji637]-year process

If you have recent lineage from Italy you can apply and receive citizenship.

Im starting the process and the attorney wants $10K plus all fees. It doesnt seem that complicated.

Has anyone done it or know someone that has? Am I mistaken on the ease?

A good friends spouse recently got Italian citizenship for him and their child through a law firm that specializes in this, and their process took about 2 years.

My maternal great grandparents were born in Italy and my brothers did a lot of digging for records to try and do this on their own. They found some, but not all of the necessary records, and also discovered a lot of inconsistencies, misspelled names, and a major surname change (eg, US officials changed my maternal great grandfathers 4-syllable Italian surname into an English-friendly 1 syllable Germanic name). It seems clerks recording all this info on certificates and forms back in the day were simply completing tasks, with little regard to accuracy.

My younger brother and I decided to hire the same law firm that my friends husband used, at the highest of their 3 levels of service because of all the issues with the records and documents, and the firm gathers all the documents with that level of service.

Our attorneys just recently acquired the last document they needed, so we are making progress.

Im happy to discuss details if you want to PM me.

Dad was still a German citizen when I was born, middle sister too. She got her EU passport. Her daughter was born in Spain. Mom’s mom was born here but her parents were from Italy, not sure if that would apply for me. But having a Canuck passport with no ambitions to live to Europe, not sure if it matters.

So if my mom could get Italian citizenship. Can I qualify to get citizenship after she gets hers?

I could get my Iranian citizenship. Which is not so attractive (at least for now).
