“HELLO, CLEVELAND!! (Hotel help?) Oberlin College Visit

Ok, doods, self explanatory. The hotels near the airport look total shit. We fly in @ 11:00 pm on a Sunday, and need to be at Oberlin by 8:30 am Monday. Advice? All I really need is a very good gym, even if that means getting a day pass somewhere. Is it stupid to think about staying downtown? (My kid is not an early riser, lol)

Obviously the city would have better food options, etc.
Why not stay in Oberlin? Seems like a nice hotel there. I can't confirm, I haven't been back since I graduated in '72.Also, why Oberlin? It's a weird place. Best described as a school for smart people with no social skills. Maybe it's changed. Jack Scott was once the AD and Tommie Smith (the one in the middle with his fist in the air) the Asst AD.

If its just for a few hours from Sunday night and checking out early Monday morning, then yeah, Id look closer to Oberlin (which is kind of in the middle of nowhere, but also close enough to a bunch of somewheres).

If you are going to be in town for more than just a day then Id stay in Cleveland. Here's some options:

https://www.gliddenhouse.com/

Glidden House is a great little boutique hotel in University Circle, which would let you get in another college visit at Case Western Reserve University (an excellent school), walk to great restaurants in Univ. Cir., Little Italy, the Worlds #4 Symphony in the stunning Severance Hall, and the critically acclaimed Cleveland Museum of Art.

https://www.hilton.com/en/hotels/cle...Vic2l0ZQ%3D%3D

Hilton Cleveland Downtown is a great daily driver. Fantastic views of Lake Erie and downtown, outoor bar on the 37th floor, gym, central location, etc.

https://www.theschofieldhotel.com/

The Schofield is a really great boutique hotel in a newly renovated 1900s building downtown. It's a Kimpton so if you have IHG points its an easy pick. Close to Cleveland Clinic (#2 hospital in the country and #1 heart hospital if you want to get in some work) and a straight shot downtown.

Bring a climbing rope and hit the awe-inspiring cliffs of Whipps Ledges in Hinckley Park. March 15 is Buzzard Fest in the town of Hinckley, but the buzzards should be at the ledges, waiting for you to crater.

We are there (Cleveland area) from midnight Saturday through Monday afternoon, so pretty limited. Any estimates of what traffic would be like from downtown to Oberlin at 7:00 am on Monday morning?

Shade over 30 minutes tops I’d guess. You’re going away from downtown too so no rush hour in that direction.

If the plan is to be in CLE on Sunday, with Oberlin tour on Monday, then back to the airport Monday afternoon, then you can fill up your Sunday with plenty of good options.
Downtown/in-town suburbs:
Cleveland Museum of Art
Severance Hall
Rock and Roll HoF
Cavs game or whatever concert is at the Arena that night.
West Side Market
Eat a bunch of great food from Little Italy, Asiatown, Slavic Village, West Side Market, fish frys
Catch some live music (the Grog Shop in Cleveland Heights; Beachland Ballroom; House of Blues; Agora Theater)
Ride Ray's Indoor Bike Park https://www.raysmtb.com/?srsltid=Afm...ZZAl7K4Wfr1ca6 No bike needed, just rent one of theirs.

Outside CLE:
Go for a hike in Cuyahoga Valley National Park (or a paddle if the weather is good)
Climb/bouldering in Hinkley Reservation on the aforementioned sandstone cliffs
Get out on Lake Erie (highly dependent on when you visit - could be ice fishing, could be boating)
Shred Boston Mills/Brandywine and post a TR here
It's steelhead season in all the Lake Erie tributaries and you don't have to go far at all to find them: Rocky River just west of downtown, Chagrin River just east of downtown.
MTB the East Rim Trail in CVNP

It has been years since I flew out of Cleveland Airport and was looking for just a place that allowed you to leave your vehicle at the site instead of long term parking, had a bed without any bed bugs, a clean shower and shuttle to the airport. There are a few hotels in and around the airport of course. but by Gym do you mean a fitness center- exercise room that has a few treadmills, and exercise like rowers, maybe some weight machines. There are of course some top hotels downtown. Not a huge travel time difference from around the airport or downtown area- 15 or 20 minutes max probably depending on the traffic and what part of downtown. And much more draw to downtown- Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum, some other good museums - University Center area Museum of Natural History, Great Lakes Science Center and of course many restaurants. I have been to N. Ridgeville and there are a few hotels there including a Motel 6 that would leave the light on for you... ;-) But not much in the way of things to do other than restaurants or a few places to shop...2 cheap national chain or franchise fitness centers would be Planet Fitness (Black card gets you in any location), or Crunch Fitness and maybe some others near depending on where you are staying and the time you have.

I'll add that the airport is in the middle of a complete overhaul and is a total mess which included closing the Sheraton hotel that was attached to the airport (not to mention the impending new Browns domed stadium and surrounding village that's being constructed across the street). The rest of the area surrounding Brook Park, where the airport is located, is mostly strip clubs that catered to the 1,000s of Ford workers that used to work where the Browns stadium will go. I wouldn't spend any more time in Brook Park than is necessary.

I say lean into it. The only thing that's truly expensive about a trip to NE Ohio is tuition at Oberlin (or CWRU, or any of the other myriad of private colleges and universities in the state - HFS there are a lot of them).

Eat some awesome food and check out a city you might not find yourself in if not for this trip. Let us know if you want any input/ideas.

I hope they dont mess with the shit brown aesthetic. Always such an uplifting airport experience. Nothing like an overwhelming wave of dread and depression hitting you right as you exit the plane. Its been years since I flew through there though, maybe it changed a while ago.

Yeah, the doo doo brown aesthetic went away some time in the mid teens, but the whole thing is in the middle of a restart on a renovation/expansion. When it was a Continental hub they built a brand new Concourse D in the early teens then Continental merged with United and United shuttered the brand new Concourse. Everything else is now crammed into A-C, with most going through C which makes it a cramped, undersized concourse and airport in general. With increased travel from smaller carriers they decided they're going to level the new, unused Concourse D, put up a new Concourse E in it's place (genius I tell ya), level the hotel and put in new parking deck in its place, renovate the Terminal and widen the existing concourses. It's a mess.

Probably longer but still under an hour- 45 to 50 minutes would be an estimate depending on where downtown they are staying and how long it would take to get to the I-90 or I71 if a bit south of right downtown...
