I wonder what ever happened to all the threads they copied to archive on Epic and if they are still available. I was never on there really but they put a ton of effort into saving what they could but I don’t know if the effort resulted in anything usable. I’d hope they gave them to pugski and he was able to import them but idk.
^ I mothballed a (much smaller) forum website a couple years ago and my provider saved everything for me. I’ve never looked at the data, but they told me I could recreate with the data the site if I wanted to.
Just sayin’
Even if they get it running again, is it already dead? The traffic right now feels like less than it is in the summer, there just aren't many of us left.
I would pay $4.20 a month subscription to keep this place going if it meant they gave IT support, and ideally migrated to another forum platform that was more stable.
I just want to be able to post pictures and make posts without the death emojis.
It has been a nice break away from TGR. I still enjoy the folks here and a lot of the content and if the site regains functionality I will continue to visit and this is not to bag on TGR.
TGR is estimated to make 7.5 million a year with a net of around 1 million.
Lonely Planet Purchases Teton Gravity Research (2015)
After Lonely Planet's new owner hired a 25-year-old neophyte to helm the famed but flailing guidebooks brand, it was anyone’s guess as to which direction it would go. But new clues to the company's future may be found in this startling acquisition.
Houghton’s latest interesting move, announced Wednesday, is the purchase of a major stake in Teton Gravity Research, the action sports media company based in Jackson, Wyoming, best known for its award-winning ski porn. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but TGR founders Steve and Todd Jones will reportedly maintain their ownership interest. Last time we spoke, Houghton made it clear he wanted video to be part of the new Lonely Planet formula. Now, this purchase marks the biggest manifestation of that to date.
(2020) Red Ventures, an owner of digital businesses, has acquired Lonely Planet, a leading global travel media company, from NC2 Media.
The companies didn't disclose the deal terms. Skift's "back-of-the-envelope" estimate is the deal is in the $50 million range, likely all cash. A banker Skift spoke with said that Lonely Planet was a "pretty distressed sale."
According to recent reports, Red Ventures is currently valued at approximately $11 billion.
Someone within that PE structure can afford to maintain this website "IF" they have any interest in continuing to do so.
I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

Still can't edit. Later taters.

^Uh oh.
I’m not a fan of the results of PE acquisition - I’ve seen some nice things cratering after PE gets its hands on them.(2020) Red Ventures, an owner of digital businesses, has acquired Lonely Planet, a leading global travel media company, from NC2 Media.
Caveat/admission: I’m not really a very informed person about PE firms and their effects, but what I’ve noticed hasn’t been reassuring or encouraging.
I wanted to edit this above but.... edit function etc.

So it goes. Time to go ski.

I haven’t been on it for years but LP used to have a fairly big and active travel forum.
Looks like they pulled the plug on the LP forum, read only now. https://www.lonelyplanet.com/landing...anet-community
In my nomad days I posted there a lot, it was a very good resource with many good posters.
Forums and pornography have really the only benefits of the internet. On a whole, I'd call it a net negative. I won't be surprised when some finance twerp kills this forum to get the glory of saving $40 a month.
don't know why i can't reset the password on my username 'acostiga' so i'm breaking out an old alias based on nick lachey from 98 degrees. would hate to lose so much history and internet ski culture. when the last great migration took place, tgr seemed strange at first. that was quite some time ago...
A bunch have definitely bled out, but I also think a lot have just gone back to lurking.Originally Posted by goldenboy

Social media is so whack these days a forum could seem like the only sane place to post.
Yeah, people don't post if they can't do so reliably. No app is also a big ask these days. Tapatalk still works better than anything else for me, but I also bought a lifetime pro subscription years ago during a really cheap sale. The free version has really obnoxious ads, and forums are so dead otherwise that most people will never even think to look for a 3rd party app.
Further, I've heard reliable reports that new users cannot create accounts (confirmation emails are never received). Between that and existing users losing access to their accounts it's not surprising that active users are way down.
My login wasn’t working in the fall and I got tired of checking to see if it started working again. It prob did before I noticed but it resulted in me not even checking the site for 3 mos or so
I have prettu much only used the iPhone app for several years now and seem to have less issues than any others I hear about
We lost iceman due to these issues a long time ago and some asshole named Ötzi has been masquerading as him ever since.
I still call it The Jake.
RIP Iceman.sadface
Iceman was not the only casualty.
Was his preferred brand of jeans ever documented?
