So you then have to cut the quote, close the new tab, go back to the thread tab and reply in the quick reply box at the bottom with no formatting buttons, but plain text editing with manual bbcoding. This is fucked.
To quote what I'm doing is click the "Multi-quote this message" icon and then clicking the big "Reply to thread" button. This is the orange one unless you're stuck in 1996 and using the dark black with blue text theme. Then to get ride of all the extra HTML bullshit, click the "Source" button in the upper left of the text editor thinger. All of this also assumes you're on a desktop and not a mobile phone.

The latest version of VBulletin is at 6.0 this board is running on version VBulletin 4.2.5. Have to assume there is a migration path to get up to the latest version with the database.

$179 for a brand new license- they offer also an upgrade and with that upgrade path comes: Includes free 1 year of Maintenance Service and one month of ticket support...

Sounds like a no brainer and should be asking about not only the pizza, beer, hookers and blow, but would the IT guys accept a donation to get the newest software version on the existing server and box fan??

VBulletin 4.2.5 released in 2017. All things considered, I think the site is doing way better than we could expect. They must have some quality box fans at tgrhq, but I'd still be happy to chip in if there's a way to do so

This it the same problem that plagues all forum vBulletin istallations: The geniuses that installed and maintain it realize they can easily customize it to add tags and ads and make search better and other fun stuff and then all of a sudden it doesn't work so well anymore and you can't upgrade since you fucked with the codebase and there is no support to speak of because it is $500 forum software.

While you possibly could be right about some of the customization, tags, etc. It is not $500 software- closer to $200 and who says there is no support? Probably no support on the old 4 generations behind software version, but certainly they mention support is included in new and upgrade options. Not sure how good the support is, but I'd also bet there is probably some fellow community users out there also for support. https://www.vbulletin.com/en/support-forums

Why don’t we collect up some money and buy some Vbulletin ourselves? Migrate our own shit?

Would also need the database or a backup to do the migration- permission from TGR as they pretty much have the rights and server. Could try the Cloud, otherwise a server and a box fan or 2 to complete the setup.

My knee-jerk, completely uninformed opinion on this is that, instead of "hacking", they should do a full re-install to the more up to date software version. If it's really only $179, and not $179 x (something), that would have to be trivial compared to ongoing server fees. And if there's custom code that's tying them to an old software version, either punt the customizations and run a vanilla version of the forum, or track down the customizations (they should be documented and flagged) and (mostly I'm guessing) copy-paste them into the newer code.
