Much like many of the tales told here, everyone seems to know that one place that raised a middle finger to indoor smoking bans when they rolled around.

I can recall one such place, the Happy Hallow Inn that had a collection jar on the counter for every time the state would come in and levy another $500 fine. The residents, er, patrons would happily chip in and light up another while sinking back into their plastic lawn furniture chairs that adorned the inside of the neon sign and wood paneled interior.

Your clothes would smell like an ashtray for a week, but damn if that place didn't have character.

Anyone else notice that smoking grits seems to have caught on again among the younger folks these days, especially the bros? I'm at the tail end of Gen X so I grew up with everyone in HS at least smoking at parties if not buying packs of Marb Mediums at 2 for $3 at the BP station on the edge of town where they didn't care. Then smoking went away for a very long time which was nice; indoor and public space bans, a general tack towards the healthy lifestyle, etc. Then it seems lately that there's 2 classes of people that regularly smoke anymore: (a) the very affluent (not the showy influencer nouveau riche types, the actual my family hasn't worked in 4 generations affluent); and (b) the average modern frat or post-grad bro type guy - it's almost like they do it to be ironic, but then you watch them run around asking to bum one outside bars, tailgates, etc. It's weird.

Yeah, my daughter and coterie, very athletic and living in NYC, are all into that.

I can't get mad, they'll be lucky to make it another 25 years the way we're going, and I think they know it and are saying fuck it.

Odd since cig smoking rates among those under 25bhave plummeted from 19% in 2011 to 5.5% in 2024. Cigs (not evapes) are not trendy in the under 18 either, lowest rates in over 25yrs. You guys might be catching anomalies.

I've been nicotine free in since 1998, I had smoking dreams of being out in the bars and lighting up a couple nights ago.

The only people I see smoking are the lower middle class and poor regardless of age.

I don’t think it’s even been cool to call cigarettes “grits”, I’ve never heard that before.

Man, sometimes at a party or a certain bar, my mind goes to how good a couple of bumps and a marlboro light would be.

My daughter and friend group are definite anomalies, I stopped trying to figure them out.

Check out the popular meme pages on social media, Barstool type feeds, the patio of any establishment that caters to the just-out-of-undergrad crowd to young professional age demo, and you'll see a bunch of smoking and smoking related jokes/memes.

Yeah, the poor and those who like vacationing on the Vegas Strip will still be a large smoking demographic, but the younger trend I've noticed is enough to open my eyes that it's not just a few here or there.

Not a fan of regulation or being told what to do but at scale (400m people) proof already exists that there’s a large enough % of people who need to be regulated due to poor decision making (see gun thread, see fatty thread, etc). If it’s a thing that’s not hurting others have at it. This one hurts others.

Regulation of the nicotine content is playing the long game - there are many other safer methods to get that drug than butts.

The % of smokers these days seems to be regionally dependent. When I visit Atlanta I am always amazed at the number of smokers. In Bozeman they are a distinct minority.
I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

Curious. When was the last time you were overcome by the smell of cig smoke? What was the length of your exposure? Do you think you now may get cancer as a result?

Smart way to help people would be to require an annual 10% reduction of nicotine in all delivery devices. Similar to requirement to reduce emissions or increase mileage in the auto industry. But I can't remember the last time we did anything smart.

True, although there is a noticeable line of demarcation that follows the Perimeter, way more smokers outside than in (likely the same for any big city). I feel like when I go to NYC, Chicago and certainly Europe the smoking is at way higher levels than I see at home. When I was in Vegas last June it was a big culture shock seeing so many smokers, much less indoors (as good as the mitigation was).

Well actually, the term grit became unpopular after the retirement of Wayne Gritzky, the grit one, in 1999.

I heard grit first from a former teammate at Holiday Valley a million years ago.

Looks like that slang definition has been around since at least 2003 on Urbandictonary:

smokinest place i've ever been is out the backdoor of any shitty bar past midnight. back nine of middling country club courses is a close second. followed by turkey, france, and china, in that order.

and yeah, i've also noticed anomalous smoking habits in the two groups bmills mentioned, as well as a few others. one of them being the bozeman-slc-boulder skibum dirtbag contingent who wear those 4 point fleece beanies with the crazy designs and loose fitting shin length jean shorts as some sort of anti fashion statement. otherwise super healthy active folks but yeah, they think cigs are edgy so they smoke. another group ties into bmills' non-nouveau wealthy category and it is the thin black sunglasses wearing urbanite ivy/ivy adjacent skinny chicks i went to boarding school with. my theory for this is since most of them study in europe and want to be like the chic, aloof euro girls they see smoking outside of cafes and clubs, they take up the habit. really any gen z social demographic that fancies itself edgy-jaded-core-etc will have a substantial faction of smokers among its ranks.

Do I think I’ll get cancer from 2nd hand smoke? No, probably from the years I smoked myself if at all.

Nicotine standalone is certainly addictive but not nearly as harmful as ripping butts. And the downstream harm of butts has been discussed ad nauseam up thread. So regulating the thing that makes butts addictive seems ok to me. And maybe in anything that’s combustible for that matter (vapes and whatnot).

    Are we arguing or agreeing?

Wasn't sseking debate. Just trying to get a gauge on the level of discomfort people feel when subjected to with 2nd hand smoke. Never heard anyone complain on the plane or train when you could and would smoke.
