Guys, I’m starting to think this 5ive thing is a giant troll. Or poorly thought out project aimed at skiers with no engineering judgement.



We’re supposed to believe these ‘industry veterans’ had no idea lateral release was a thing? And so they get this 100% predictable social media feedback and quickly whip up an extremely basic pivot (with no return springs) as a concept video? And despite all the online questions they’re still avoiding the central question of exactly how the boot toe bracket is attached / removed? And how those toe nubbins that stick out don’t bend when you’re kicking steps or walking in rocks?

Actual binding designers at ATK, Fritschi, Trab etc must be chuckling as they follow this.

The whole janky idea looks like it was started to suck up some investor money.

1. Come up with an idea after a day of skiing to make a great new lighter AT binding

2. After coming up with several ideas, go with the out furthest out in left field that has the heel piece that draws them in but no idea what to do up front, so wing it.

3. Hire inexpensive graphics guy/gal from India to create smooth video and sheet graphics.

4. Start gofundme to tease some money into the pot.

5. Hunt for someone to drop serious coin into your development phase.

6. Pay salaries, fuck around in the design studio, release some updates, more gofundme monies, announce difficulties getting to end product and shut down.

Now, if they read this (and they do for sure) they need to get involved in this discussion. It appears nobody belives in the front toe. Time to feed all the gear-geeks with information. If played right, they may find investors here. If not, other potential investors will find this thread and will draw their conclusions.

Glad you started this dedicated thread after I posted about the binding in the light binding thread, since this thread will likely be found by teh googles.

I’m not prepared to accuse the company of intentional fraud. Maybe over beers they decided Hey let’s make a lightweight version of a 1970s Look heelpiece & that snowballed into this project.

By the way does anyone remember if 5ive has clarified whether the weight claims include the (presumably steel) boot toe bracket thingy?

From what I’ve seen, the images associated with the weight claims don’t show the boot toe bracket which might give their lawyers the necessary wiggle room.

With all the bitching about the toe piece, isn’t the biggest non-starter the need to add nubbins to your tech toes??? And the fact they don’t talk about the nubbins or how the nubbins will attach to my boot (permanent or removable?). After I fuck with the toes and add nubbins will I be able to use that boot with another tech or alpine binding ever again?

I think that's pretty clear from looking at it... you just put on the bracket and screw it tight with one of the pins. It looks like there's no reason it wouldn't be easily removable, or cause damage to the boot. Looks like something to lose or forget though.

I'm not sold on their lateral release concept though. Kinda seems like the heel could still remain captive in the heel arms in many situations. I mean... the look is called a Pivot because the heel...uhh... pivots.

I like their thinking, and I really like that they are starting something new. I think people are not really understanding that it's a kickstarter... not a fully developed and tested idea. ie. you're investing in a concept. Lot's of them fail, but also startup are where the future is built.

For myself though, I'm not sure YET what it provides that's better FOR ME than the options out today. I'm sure it could eventually get there though, so I'm rooting for them. I'm still thinking of tossing in some $ just because I want to support the initiative.

Easily removable when it comes to the sole connection between my toe and the binding do not inspire me with confidence. If it’s screw on/screw off, I guess there’s loctite involved to prevent things from backing out?

Regardless, I would like to see that part elaborated on more as it’s pretty crucial.
