    BC Ski For My Daughter

    Hello all,

Santa is looking into a BC ski for my daughter. It should be light enough for some full scope touring beyond what is merely lift accessed but otoh beefy enough to handle the mix of conditions we often see here in Europe.

She is about 5"4' (165 cm), about 50 kg (110 lbs), sportive (ex gymnast), solid skier, can charge quite well without being overly aggressive.

Was thinking of something like a Black Crow Camox Freebird or Atomic Backland 98W or 100 in a 164 length since I heard positive things about but have no personal experience on them. The sticks should be somewhere around the 95-100 mm mark underfoot.

Any other/better suggestions from the collective?

    Thanks a bunch!

Don’t know about touring skis as such, but I’ve sort of realized (wife about same size as your daughter) that everyday skis in their size are pretty light and will be just fine for touring as long as you go with a dedicated touring binding.

If she skis fast/hard a very light ski might be unstable, regardless of her being light.

You should consider length though. I’d say hard charging ladies often ski longer lenghts inbounds relative to their height than men. That could be cumbersome touring.

    Maybe I’m plain wrong though

Volkl Shiro, Confession, Revolt JR in 163cm - all basically the same ski with different graphics and name. 100mm underfoot. Still pretty light in part b/c it is a "junior ski." Lots of smaller adult ladies seem to like the largest Volkl Jr ski, at least on the Ski Diva forum. My daughter has Shiros in 143cm and the skis are very very capable in variable snow. I have a set of 158cm Volkl Mantra Jr that I'm planning to use for my daughter and son as touring skis when they are a bit bigger (similar design to the Shiro but narrower with a 86mm waist, which is a better size for our area as a general kids touring ski).

There are a lot of other good options out there too, but wanted to put this on your radar.

    BC Ski For My Daughter

we sell a lot of the Backland 98 at the shop I work at - nice and light, great daily driver touring ski - I’m rolling a men’s 100 in a 188 to start this season

I didn't believe in reincarnation when I was your age either.

I would check soothski for the flex of skis you’re considering. I got my daughter Armada Tracers and she never really liked how they skied. Recently I found out that’s probably because they are way, way stiffer than my wife’s Hannibal’s of the same length, which she liked much better.
She was about 130 lbs last year so yours is even lighter.
Also, you might consider going a bit narrower. At her weight a narrower ski will give the same float as a wider ski would for you.
For example, for my daughter, at 140 lbs, she has the same surface pressure with a 97mm ski as I at 180 lbs , do with a 110mm ski , both at 10cm less than our body height.

Slightly wider than you initially asked but I’d give a nod to Salomon qst echo. They have a 165 or I believe a 157 and are a 106 underfoot. Super approachable ski that is great across the board

    Thanks all for the feedback.

The Icelantic looked tempting in particular but got a good deal on the Camox Freebirds and went with them.

    Merry Christmas!
