Blinked or forced a sit down negotiation? "Speaking to reporters at Queen's Park Tuesday, Ford said Lutnick had "sent out an olive branch" for provincial and federal Canadian officials to meet in Washington to "discuss the future" in the wake of repeated tariff threats from U.S. President Donald Trump. They are set to meet on Thursday, Ford said — and in return, Ontario agreed to suspend its 25 per cent surcharge on exports of electricity to Michigan, New York and Minnesota."With any negotiation that we have, there's a point that both parties are heated, and the temperature needs to come down," Ford said."They understand how serious we are about the electricity and the tariffs, and rather than going back and forth and having threats to each other, we have both agreed that cooler heads prevail. We need to sit down and move this forward."This morning it was 50% on steel and aluminium now it's back to 25%.

The Arctic is the new Panama Canal. Armies are training on skis. So there's that.

Missile defense pact against who? Trump is Putin’s little bitch. This is about control. Resources and shipping. And grandstanding to his ignorant base.

    It's a climate change initiative.

    1) Roll back all regulations on fossil fuels. Drill baby drill. Profit.

    2) Annex canada through 4D chess maneuvers.

    3) Earth irreparably warms. Florida is underwater.

    4) Abandon Florida. Move mar-a-lago to Newfoundland

Only six percent of the oil produced in the US comes from public land. All that "drill baby drill" bullshit is a ruse. Oil companies aren't going to invest in drilling if the price of oil dives in a recession.

Of all the things that might hold that plan up, you think it's the permits?

Trump wants Greenland because it is a territory of a NATO member. He wants to start a conflict with NATO so that the US will get booted or he'll have a pretense to leave.

To the extent there is a plan, yes firing permit approvers will hold things up. A lot of things in America have become almost impposible to permit. Gavin Newson recently talked about the immposibiluty of getting approval for federal forest management wildfire risk mitigation. It takes too long for the FDA to appove new drugs.. We desperately need federal permitting reform.

Cutting staff without reforming regulation only makes the process even slower. Without staff the government can't approve right of way road access for oil and gas. They can't grant archaeological clearances. Can't grant grazing rights. Can't help fight wildfires. And can't conduct oil and gas lease sales and issue permits. Can't approve more logging, too.

Speaking of logging, Fuckin’ Princess posted a good take on why Canadian lumber is just better. We're fortunate when we can access Canadian lumber markets:

We haven't permitted an oil refinery since 1977. Almost 50 fuckin' years.

Ezra Klein has been banging this drum for awhile now and has a book coming out on this topic soon.

My read is that most of the fired regulators are going to be backfilled with schedule F regulators aligned with pumping permits out the door.

how it has always been is that NA is one been one big commodity market where mills and brokers buy low & sell high sell pretty much like any day trader except with truck or car loads of wood For lumber sold into LA to rebuild the lumber broker will just hit a few more keys on the calculator I knew a family with an office and a bunch of phones

There was a great pod interview from Paddle and Portage about the recent Canoecopia event in Madison. There is a large Canadian presence at the event. One of the booth holders came over the border with a lot of gear at 10 pm the night before tariffs were enacted. Their expeditor did the paperwork wrong, which said they crossed at 6 am the next day. So they got a message the next morning they owed 40K in tariffs. They had a gps timestamp, so he spent several hours correcting the errors successfully. No tariffs. About an hour later , Trump postponed the tarrifs again.

So, whole lot of wasted time for absolutely nothing. Trump is so bad for business.

Lots of unity at the event. Fuck Trump.

On US oil refineries, yes no new have been built for a long time but I think there have been lots of expansions esp on gulf coast making up for refineries closing in the NE. The US is a major exporter of refined pet with sometimes being the US's biggest export in terms of $.

some whiz kid driving an LT in Cow town told me on-line that the refineries in the mid west are configured to run the shitty Alberta crude

so it would cost billions and take years to change that

True lies ? OR when will America see the price of rug go big
