Fuck Murray Edward’s and I feel bad for all the staff that have to face the repercussions of him being a piece of shit.

I think the province will do its job, but either way Technical Safety BC oversees the lights iirc. I’m going to find a contact for the minister responsible as well and start asking questions.

Edwards can eat a dick. Albertas also paying for his new fucking stadium.

TSB is already there as far as I heard. It sounds like they have to do non destructive testing on every single gondy arm. If one more is cracked, they have to replace them all.

the gondy will be down for the season. There's already something in the works from industry people calling for KH to follow the proper channels and be transparent.

Wonder how many other gondolas have exactly the same design of arm? I doubt that non-destructive inspection for cracking is considered routine maintenance by Poma and the operators (though I would welcome a correction from any lift engineers). Might be big unexpected demand for non-destructive inspections this summer.

Was there at Louise yesterday. Knee deep low density pow, couldn’t feel the base over on WH2. Lucked out and got WH2 rope drop after waiting for 2 minutes and got an incredible lap down A gully in perfect light. Much needed reset. Fingers crossed the Thursday storm over delivers the same way this one did.

Maybe the testing companies will offer up a groupon.

On the gondi arm at KH. For the pictures of the close up failure and looking at it from the ground looks like a fatique crack started at the most highly stressed part of the arm . Crack grew until the remaining materail couldn't take the force /.weight and failed. I would think NDE , like magnetic particle or dye would show if crack no matter how small. looking at the web cams they don't seem to be starting that work yet. I would have expected they would have created a enclosure at the base to bring 2 at a time and do the NDE. Maybe they don't have the plan approved by Min of Labour.
If more cracked I wouldn't think that have to replace all. Just the ones that show cracking. Then replace all in summer as their life has been exceeded. Would think this is not a unique design and if doing NDE is not part of the scheduled inspections then it will now be. Will have to be some sort of schedule for operational hours just like planes.

^ I bet there is a Leitner-Poma inspection spec, and I would be shocked if it was followed. I know the maintenance teams WANT to do the best they can but are often hindered by corporate. Just how badly.........can't wait to find out.

Fernie started out rainy this morning and cooled off with some wind during the day to dry out some of the snow.

    Fun day, overall

    ??????KHMR Operations Update??????

In the meantime, resort operations are up and running with the Catamount and Pioneer Chairlifts along with the Jellybean Magic Carpet in operation daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. All base area services operated by KHMR will remain open daily.
Starting Saturday, March 15, we will be operating the Stairway to Heaven Chairlift and opening our upper mountain terrain for skiing and riding. Access to this lift will require a ski tour or a walk/hike from the top of the Pioneer Chairlift up to the base of the Stairway to Heaven Chairlift. A defined “uptrack” route will be set for bootpacking or skinning, leading skiers up into Crystal Bowl to the base of the lift. The Stairway to Heaven Chairlift will be in operation from 10:00 a.m. through to 3:30 p.m. to allow skiing and riding in the high alpine terrain. The ongoing schedule for this service will be determined following our first weekend of operation, but if all proves successful, we will look to provide this service daily.

25cm up high at revy, should be a nice weekend even if it feels like the season is really winding down here.

mntlion, I'll be with the family and we won't have touring gear. How long do you think it would take to hike from top of Pioneer lift to Stairway lift? Is that enough terrain to warrant skiing there instead of driving on to ski Revy?

apologies for weighing in but i would be pretty excited to be at kicking horse right now (but not with my family). that walk is probably 45-60 mins but once you’re up there the snow is good and untouched.

revy lift corrals were completely packed on Stoke the last two days so unless you’re hiking then you’re skiing bumps in glades. it’s fun but i don’t know how far out of the way i’d go for it or how long the pow on the hikes can be expected to last (or how many you can do with family either).

neither of the lower mountains are skiing great so you’re only really comparing the alpine terrain at the top.

my impression could be a little glass half full because my kh days were cut short by the fiasco and i went to revy instead which was really good but *everyone* came out for it.

im sure mtnlion knows better than me but that’s my impression from ping ponging around the mountains the last ten days.

KH just posted an update to their socials about the up track from Pioneer to Stairway. On that update they said the hike “may take 45 mins, depending on conditions and pace.” Guessing that’s on the conservative side.

Sad news from today. Fatal avalanche reported near Lake Louise this afternoon. One dead, one rescued by Parks around pipestone area in the Lake Louise backcountry. Be safe out there.

I’m off skis for a bit nursing an injury but judging from various friends’ feeds, it looks like SSV and LL and both skiing very well at the moment.

Just having Stairway open at KH actually sounds kinda awesome. Especially if all the bowls are open and you can do some short hikes to get over into some of the other terrain (which would, of course, also require some hiking at the bottom to get back to Stairway).

Before I throw them out on the local buy and sell is anyone interested in a set of women's size 25.5 Nordica Strider 95 with din and grip walk soles. Skied one day and no work done to liner or shell. Thinking $250, they are in Jasper but can be in Banff/Canmore Monday
