mocking someone, or 'laughing in their face' may be the way to deal with someone having a meltdown in some regions, but I know of two regions where doing so would likely lead to an escalation, potentially including the use of weapons ( knives or guns ) ;

There are areas in the midwest and the east that I am aware conflict has lead to stabbings ;
I seriously recommend walking away from someone having a meltdown, and if you feel strongly about it report the aggressor to Management.

Safety is everyone's responsibility, and the video function of your cellphone is a wonderful tool.

Brundage Mountain, Idaho a number of years ago, spring ski day. Lift tickets were buy one ticket and get the other for 50% off.
I'm standing in the ticket line to purchase my lift ticket and white trash fella who was with his boyfriend and their son, I guess.
White trash fella starts arguing with the ticket guy about how the buy one ticket and get 50% off the other was false advertisement and was throwing a fit about the prices saying he thought it was buy one and get one free (clearly illiterate). This goes on for about 15 minutes, meanwhile the line for people actually wanting to purchase lift tickets is getting longer.

I decide that I'm sick of waiting for this douchebag to be done arguing with the ticket guy. I ask him politely if he is going to buy a ticket or not and if not please step to the side so that those of us who want to ski can ski. He gets up in my face and starts into it with me about how he thinks this mountain is mismanaged and is selling tickets like this is false advertising. I ask him once again if he is just going to argue with the ticket guy or is he going to purchase a ticket and ski. I can tell he is getting more pissed off at me and mumbles something, I turn to my wife and say "what a fucking douchebag", loud enough so he can too hear me. He then rears around and asks me "Did you just call me a douchebag?", I quickly reply, "Yep". He then threatens to "kick my ass". I say, "you mean you're going to kick my ass in front of this whole line of people wanting to buy a lift ticket and they'll witness your assault on me?

Not much was said after that and he and his boyfriend and their kid walk away, without purchasing any tickets, with their pathetic heads hung low, as he gives me a scowl and I smile and wave, saying "hope you have a great day"!

-goat, until your post, we are not talking about "rude skiers" - 'aggro dudes' as I read mikey's post above, was trying to precipitate a physical "fight".
as I began my post, you (both) may live and ski in a region where 'mock' -ing someone or 'laughing in their face' is an effective response.
outside of Chicago, I would expect these actions to be considered 'escalation' and could lead to violence - including weapons.

I share your cynicism about reporting this behavior, but I also believe it is the proper action ( If any action is to be taken. )
( Security contractors at a 'ski resort' was a new experience to me in 2023 ... and that's another story )

This type of behavior seems to be more common since 2020 -
we had a situation like this at closing time late in the 2023 season ; the next opportunity the aggressor was accompanied by the Manager for the day .

mikey's situation was resolved without physical violence, and
I agree with you, that father is traumatizing his daughters, probably their mother
( his m-i-law apologized to mikey- ) .

I am glad for you, that you live in a region where laughing at people resolves conflict.

mikey- , I have no intention of criticizing your handling of your situation ;
I did want to raise the idea that your response may not work everywhere.

in this region, if one sends someone se to the ER, I would expect the person causing hospital emergency care to be the one going to jail
( arrested, charged, scheduled for court ).

Skiing is supposed to be Fun !

But If this is what we have become as a society, pursuing ' Recreational activity' with hostility ,

my Time has passed.
