on yesterday’s Tales From The Golden Road show there was a caller who taught a course on the Dead at Duke, and he and his wife were at an event with Phil for one of Phil’s foundations. His wife, who was not a big Deadhead, apparently asked Phil about why so many of the Dead’s fans took drugs, and Phil replied thusly:
“What did the Deadhead say when he ran out of weed? A: What is this shitty music?”
As they said on the show, it’s a perfect demonstration of Phil’s (and the whole band’s) self-effacing, not-taking-yourself-too-seriously, humble attitude about their success. We shan’t see his like again…
