    Achilles tendinitis?

    Anyone dealt with Achilles tendinitis?

I ran a lot of miles last year, and started to feel really stiff/sore ankles, particularly in the mornings. In retrospect I think it was actually Achilles, not the ankles themselves. Skiing seemed ok, but I’d feel it after touring. I kept up around 20-30 miles/week running over winter/spring, and then I started to feel more distinct discomfort in the Achilles while running. A combo of that plus getting sick and some time-consuming home reno turned a short rest into about 3 months off running.

I tried to restart running over the past few weeks before ski season and was surprised to immediately feel stronger pain in the Achilles even after the rest - pretty constant on short, light runs.

I started working with a PT last week, but curious if anyone here has dealt with similar? It’s been pretty demoralizing going from nearly 200 miles last Oct to a whopping 16 miles this month. It feels like a long road to go, and I really don’t want to f up ski season either.

Tendon damage can take a very long time to properly heal. Be patient. You really don’t want it to get any worse.

Christian McCaffery has superhuman healing abilities, has every healing technology in the world available to him, and has millions of dollars riding on him to heal quickly... and its still taking months. Its no joke, and its a long road to hoe.

Back a long, long time ago, when I actually could heal in a reasonable amount of time, orthotics and a graduated stretching program cured my AT in about 8 months. Got it from playing squash.

I would get achilles tendinitis at the heel attachment. The best thing was eccentric calf raises and rest.

I've had PF , I think from being a heel striker, I took a year off running and it went away

Getting bac at it I took my runners to the local running guru, I had got em from a big box store they were not old but he said these are old shit and showed me that there was almost no cush left in the sole said he could tell by the model # they were old so they must have sat in the warehouse for years

then he watched me on the tread mill in different shoes and evertualy had me in the most aggressive motion-control shoe he sold which was the Saucony Stabil grid,

a motion control shoe put me on the balls of my feet, it was impossible to heel strike, I think you wana land on the balls of your feet and the motion control made me do that, I don't know if motion control is a thing anymore or WTF

So make sure you got good shoes and a guru at a running store is worth paying list for those shoes, shoes from a big box fucked me up so no saving there IME

PF went away after about a year and never came back

Thanks all, appreciate the insights. Definitely coming to grips with it being a long process.

For those that dealt with it, was it an issue skiing as well?

That was a along time ago but I seem to remember the foot immobilized in a big plastic ski boot was fine,

at the time i was also doing a lot of XC so the foot was less imobilized but I think I was still xc skiing, at least skate skiing

The problem as i understood it was that in the AM when you get out of bed the adhesions that happened/ repaired during the night with your foot pointed get torn which is what hurts 1st thing

SO my orthotic maker AKA " the foot guy" told me to try sleeping in my skate boots which would keep the foot more bent as the adhesions formed but skate boots kept me awake

there used to be a sock you could wear which bent your foot ( as oposed to the pointy toes ) for the overnight repair, try google

Have you been to a foot doctor? I was diagnosed with plantar fascitis and Achilles tendinitis after a few week long bouts of not being able to walk (but could ski in boots ;-) ) to some with assistance. The prescription was orthotics and PT. In my case, one leg is longer than the other/hip canted and forward. Since, I've been religious about footbeds in every shoe and boot I own, including slippers. In one ski boot I also added a shim. Touch wood, I have been pain free since last spring.
    Best regards, Terry

I started having what I thought was plantar fasciitis in my right foot this spring and finally got it checked after a big day in the mountains over the 4th of July. Referred to a podiatrist that I saw in August who diagnosed both Achilles Tendonitis and Plantar Fasciitis which counter each other so far as recovery goes. They gave me some felt heel lifts to wear for the AT and a prescription for orthotics which didn't come in until October 2 so I've had those in my shoes for 3 weeks. I hiked and hunted a lot in those three weeks and was still pretty limited by the pain. For the last week I've been using one of those night socks for the PF and it seems to be working a bit. Pretty frustrating process but look forward to skiing.

Good reminder about Christian McCaffrey's recovery. He's a beast.

It’s called a night splint. Good for plantar fasciitis. Might help with an Achilles issue as well.

Or you can do shock wave therapy, 5 sessions, once a week and you're healed

struggling with this same issue since March this year. Just now starting to feel close to 90%. be very careful and slow returning to activity. I went too fast and it set me back 3 weeks every time I pushed it and achilles got very sore after a run or hike. go slow its hard but be patient and if you feel any pain back off and rest. Heel rise exercises work. Icing after a work out also helped. Touring on skis definitely stressed the achilles for me but just resort skiing was ok as long as I did not have walk far in the boots.
