Jeffsy or Hugene, maybe a ripmo

Wife needs a new bike. So many good friggin options. Any reason not to get one of the above bikes or to choose one over the other?

Sizing good, geo good. She rips. Good all around rider. Currently on an esker elkat. Looking at higher end builds.

    Love any feedback.

Fit and finish is maybe a bit better on the hugene. Jeffsy is maybe a little more plush over small bumps, hugene is probably a bit more efficient. For an equivalent build, hugene will be lighter.

With the current propain sale, it's kinda hard to pass up a hugene.

If she's a medium, I'll have a mint condition Transition Sentinel (carbon GX Transmission build) for sale shortly... right there with the Hugene in almost all aspects, IMO.

She’s actually between a small and medium. Most bikes she’s a small. She has a friend with a smuggler that I can have her ride for sizing. Would be an option for sure.

Edit---didn't you own a hugene for a while?

I know the ripmo has been popular and it pedals well. Not up to date on the hugene or propains customer service. Jeffsy has been getting great reviews and i find those guys ez to deal with. I think they have an additional 10% off of everything until tge end of the month as well, even on top of current sales. Jeffsy has a lot of rave reviews and i think the small is a mullet and their bikes probably have the best stand over. A couple friends ive suggested that bike to ,and bought them, are very happy. A buddy loves the all around capability of his ripmo but thats full 9er and not great standover, but thats fine for him. Im interested in hearing more about propain and the hugene though

Pretty much what I’ve been hearing between the ripmo and Jeffsy . Ripmo is more efficient, Jeffsy probably is more fun for most people.

The hugenes chain stays, have me a little concerned. But I don’t actually know how that translates into real world good or bad.

I was thinking the small jeffsy was mullet. Maybe it was a small run of the "uncaged" jeffsy. It has a flip chip that accomodates for that There was 2 uncaged models. Just one showing on the canadian site. Shorter seat tube and chainstay on the jeffsy. No dt storage on hugene. 445 on the hugene isnt terrible though. Longer cs has allowed me to run a higher bar and softer front suspension. Longer cs keeps the front down on climbs so higher bar works. Higher bar puts weight rearward a bit on the downs so run a touch softer fork.
Maybe show her this uncaged model. Click image for larger version.

Full disclosure this is literally the "only" reason she discovered the jeffsy. She loves that thing and frankly, I'm alright with it. Unreal spec.

That Jeffsy looks sick. But a Hugene is $1000 less with better parts.

I've spent time on a Jeffsy (albeit not the current version). Spent a bit more time on an Elkat. Owned a Hugene. Currently own a Sentinel.

Sentinel is probably closest to the Elkat in terms of suspension, but completely different feel due to geometry. Sentinel feels like more bike than any of the other options. Hugene is much lighter than an Elkat and feels peppier. Less planted on descents though. Jeffsy is a pretty middle of the road option.

Tough to give any more coherent suggestions than that without knowing her preferences, where she's riding, etc.

Yes propain prices look quite good. I think the hugene is under 30lbs as well. Stand over looks really good as well. Ill have to add those guys to the watch list

Their weights are a little bullshitty. Mine was just over 30 lbs without pedals (with a Fox 36, so maybe just under 30 if you went with the Pike).

So---she's coming from an elkat and will actually keep that bike. She's had that bike since it came out...so however many years and miles that is. She is overbiked IMO (but I ride a Ripley). I know she likes the cushy feel of the elkat. I'd say she rides 50% copper harbor, which is everything under the sun from big days on the bike to hot laps on some more DH oriented trails. She doesn't jump or do drops, and definitely has a confidence limit on steep chunder. Her favorite trail right now is called "Bermasaurus", which is exactly what it sounds like. I actually think that says a lot about her riding preferences.

I actually am not pumped about the Jeffsy price, so when the propain entered the mix I got pretty interested pretty quickly.

Sounds like from her current bike (Elkat) she would probably notice some nervousness, but also notice some "zippiness" on climbs and long days.

Yep, sure did. I personally like the Smuggler a bit better than the Hugene, but they're both great bikes. The medium I have is one of our "demo bikes", but it was only ridden on two trips and otherwise saw time as my wife's bike - which means she rode it on dirt roads and bike paths. Thus the mint condition. I will also have a really nice medium Sentinel for sale if she wants something a bit bigger.

I'm not sure nervousness is quite what I'd call it. Maybe "taughtness?"

Compared to the Elkat, the hugene is slacker, has longer chainstays, a longer reach, and rolls on 29" wheels. All of that will make it feel considerably more stable at speed, and it'll roll through techy chunk more easily.

But the suspension is less cushy. It rides relatively high in it's travel and it's not overly plush.

The hugene feels more like a true trail bike. It's goes uphill well, and it goes downhill fine. The Elkat felt a bit more downhill oriented, but it loses out on some stability just due to somewhat dated geometry.

Smokkan's smuggler would be a rad option if the size / price fits. Those are cool bikes.

if justcuz is not interested in your bikes I have a friend that is looking. I have been lending her my old 5010. The Sentinel looks like more bike than she needs but the Smuggler might be a good fit. Post up when you are ready to sell.

Last question. Is the 150 fork a must? The only stock option is the fox factory (decent upcharge). Tempted to just get it with the 140 fork and swap the damper (if possible) if it doesn't hit the mark. if the damper isn't swappable for the cost, I could probably just sell what's on there and purchase with correct travel.

I only ran mine with a 150 (fox factory 36) and I liked it that way (although given the option, I'd rather a lyrik). I think a 140 would just make it feel a bit more xc-ish, and due to that "taught" suspension, I didn't want it any more xc-ish.

Yeah, there's an upcharge. But you get 35% off that upcharge, so...

I guess it really just comes down to how much you love your wife.

Ha! Just think of how many brownie points you get for buying her factory level suspension.

(In all honestly, zero brownie points. Ask me how I know).

She just rode a medium smuggler tonight. It’s just too big. Small is the best fit. Probably going to end up with the propain.

Bumping this thread---if anyone sees an Orchid colored small smuggler around, do let me know. Still kicking around the propain, but since the sale isn't quite as amazing the smuggler is still sort of hanging out as an option.
