Missoula to Petaluma road trip advice needed (car camping in Elko, Reno, ETC)

Was looking at making a reservation for camping in Truckee in the return trip and website says Donner Park campgrounds are closed?! I suppose it used to be cold there in October.
Was hoping not to drive as far each day. That was awful.
Dog is doing better.

Was planning on Friday night.
Everything is up in the air now with my dad's indigestion that looked like angina that turned into the doctor discovering he was likely to have a MACE in the next 6 weeks. They admitted him for observation and keep coming up with new tests. Some he might have to be transported to Santa Rosa for.
Wasn't planning on eating my birthday cake in the ER, but at least it's across the street from their apartment complex?
What a great vacation. Fuck, my parents are old.

Not gonna be able to drop on my sister-in-law so direct route home over the weekend would be best.
Winnemucca looks like a good place to stop, but it's not halfway. Route looks like the middle of fucking nowhere. What should I do? Back across 80 to Wells and then slightly faster way home from there? Not much slower than Winne. Stay in Elko?
I suppose I could get back Monday morning by adding another stop. Fuck, I hate this.
