And happy 100th to the real President Carter. He certainly set the standard for an ex-POTUS. What a great human being.

Carter has walked the walk of a true Christian, and as a leader spoke to the American people like they were mature adults. Thus was he of course doomed to political failure, but history may view him favorably, depending on who wins and gets to write it.

Happy birthday, Mr. President, and congratulations on a long life well lived!

History will judge Jimmy Carter favorably. Jimmy Carter appointed Paul Volcker as the Fed chair, in 1979, to defeat inflation. It worked at the expense of Carter's presidency due to the ensuing and at the time necessary recession. Jimmy did the right thing for the country. Carter also deregulated oil, trucking, railroads, airlines, and beer. Today, America has the most variety and best beer in the world thanks to its craft brewery culture. And according to Soviet officials, Carter's foreign policy in Afghanistan and work to boost non-Soviet oil production, policies which continued under Reagan, led to the Soviet Union's collapse.

As is mostly the case in America, political narratives underplay just how much continuity typically exists between presidencies. Jimmy Carter's policies really did set the stage for the booming Reagan era 80s.

If not for the October Surprise and treasonous acts of the Reagan candidacy, he might have won in 1980. What a different world it would have been.

Not to distract from the birthday celebrations, but hasn't that been roundly labeled a conspiracy theory?

I was too young to know about that first hand, but remember discussing it in connection with the 1980 election in my modern American history course.

well, it's certainly a conspiracy theory and a good one, but I don't know that I have ever seen it debunked.

Jimmy Carter also said "I'd like to see the last guinea worm die before I do." The Carter Center helped drive a massive decline in guinea worm disease. Cases went from around a million annual down to around ten in 2023. That's a hundred thousand fold or 99.999% decease in dracunculiasis cases.

Carter is the prime example of how a president can be a prisoner of events over which they have no control.
A great man to be sure. The historians can judge his presidency.

Just remember that you’re a living organism on this planet and you’re very safe, you’ve just taken a heavy drug… just relax, stay inside, and listen to some music. Do you have any Allman Brothers?

One of the highlights of my career was providing ski boots to former President and Mrs. Carter back in the mid 90's.
In addition to being two of the nicest, most genuine people you could ever want to meet, it was remarkable how gracious he was to everyone in the store who passed by. Lots of people wanted to shake his hand or just say something to him.
He took the time with each of them and made everyone feel special.
His career after he left office should serve as an example to all. Easily our best former President.

This new book on Jimmy Carter looks interesting. 12 stories of President Carter and his longtime fly fishing buddy navigating diplomacy while casting lines, published by one of my favorite long-form article magazines, The Bitter Southerner.
