dang akpm a fellow tier 3 in TRS? I rolled mine over after 8 years teaching in Kodiak. There's something to be said that you can move it the money to an 401k/ira instead of stuck in AK.

I could post plenty of links for a counter argument, but I don’t care to right now.
Government pensions are bloated and underfunded. And pay is not less than private sector in many jobs. So they get same pay but guaranteed benefits instead of sucky 401k
And then there’s the politically connected that get promoted a year before retirement so their pension is more than their top career salary b

For sure public employee retirement could use more oversight and accountability. I would rather people make a career out of public service jobs and defined pensions are an incentive for that.

No. I skied with AKPM. Nice guy. Major back seater. I constantly hear Moles’ yelling in my head…forward, forward…hands up. I ski better at my advanced age than when I was a kid thanks to Gordycamps.

Defined pensions (public) are still market based. They invest their funds in the “market”, although partially funded by state or local govt. contributions per employee group contracts. Some are better than others. CALPERS is one of the best. I am very happy my wife was a 30 year State of Cal employee. And when she’s pissed, I am thankful for community property!!!!.


Private defined…not so good.
