Snake Bite

Anybody ever been bitten by a snake? I was fishing with my daughter on Saturday. We had finished up for the day but my daughter wanted to stop and throw a few fly's in one of her favorite spots. I decided to just watch and let the dog run for a bit. While walking to the river through sage brush and grass I saw at least two different snakes. I was too busy trying to keep the dog away to notice what kind they were.

Watched my daughter throw a few bugs and then moved upriver to a new spot. While walking felt something that I thought at the time was a wasp or bee sting just above my ankle. Looked and didn't see anything around (bee or snake). It hurt more then normal, kind of a burning. But only one mark on the leg that didn't really swell or get red. It hurt through out the night. Just sharp stabbing pains that would last a few seconds and then be gone.

Its been two days now and still hurts. But not at the bite site more down in the ankle bone, seems to be deeper tissue and not surface like a sting or spider bite would be. Not really any irritation at the bite area either.

Wife and secretary think its a snake bite and I need to see the physician. I was also but by a wasp earlier in the day on Saturday while pushing through some brush to fish a beaver pond. That irritation was gone within a few hours. Anything I should be concerned with?

Have you tried dousing the bite with piss? If you have any left over, you can drink it. It’s sterile and tastes delicious

But if it still hurts a few days after the bite and you think the pain is spreading away from the puncture, why not get it checked out?

Are there in fact venomous snakes in your area?

Dammit I thought someone was going to say I was gonna die. Guess I better spend my last remaining hours spending my retirement fund on hookers and blow.

Gave it a thorough piss washing, didn't help, wife questioned the smell and wondered if I had been with above mentioned hookers.

Great Basin rattlesnakes around but not sure this was from a venomous snake. Just a bit painful. But either way I'm gonna die!

In middle school and only after harassing it, a garter snake latched onto the end of my thumb. Couldn't shake it off despite my best efforts which was concerning.

A friend down the street was heavy into venomous snakes and got bit by a copperhead. Big swole. Hospital. Not a good time.

doesnt sound like a snake bite. would have bled some and would show signs of infection at the site.

I'm a surgeon who has treated rattlesnake bites, including a 270 pound guy who died (we think the snake got him in a vein on the back of his hand. 2 days out with no swelling or discoloration--if it was a rattlesnake the amount of venom sounds trivial. Another wasp sting sounds a lot more likely. The main treatment for venomous snake bite is antivenom, lots of it. I don't see anyone giving you antivenom at this point. (We used all the antivenom in Sacramento in the aforementioned case.)

Could be a chaparral or cactus spine that bit you. I got poked in the shin by a chaparral once, still hurt a few days later, maybe similar to yours, I went to the doc just in case - infected under the skin, antibiotics to fix. Apparently if you push on your skin and it leaves a depression, you got fluid under there, maybe infection. Mostly better a week later

Doubtful it's from a basin rattlesnake. That venom is rich in hemotoxin and myotoxin which causes cell damage; there's discoloration and swelling if there's venom in the wound.

Throbbing nerve pain can be from a wasp or ant. There's things in the sagebrush like tarantula hawks, velvet ants and red harvester ants that pack potent algesic venoms.
