    Karen Carpenter

Yeah... I know... Karen Carpenter but hear me out. I appreciate all music. Sometimes it's a mood thing - I'm sure many of you are the same.

I've got a playlist running on my computer while I work on my felting projects and it runs the gambit from 50s to soft rock to southern rock, grunge etc. etc.

Superstar by Karen Carpenter just came on and man.. that woman's voice is like the smoothest most decadent chocolate and warm brandy. Any instrument played skillfully is a beautiful thing and her voice is a beautiful thing. Such a tragedy that she starved herself to death.

    Karen Carpenter

Amazing voice and musician skills. Her drum solos were always a big feature when she played on tv.

Went to see them when on a family trip to Vegas when I was around 11. I don’t really remember much other than the opening act was Don Rickles

Really tragic story. One of my most favorite bands ever did a cover and a poignant original song about her. The second (original) song might not be to your taste, but check out the lyrics.

Both are very good. Love that in the first one they copied her video set up.

If you do a video search for Karen you will find many interviews where hosts tried to intervene and help her to see she was at an unhealthy weight. Of course back then we didn't speak of anorexia as it wasn't fully understood.

In that video I posted she looks pretty good.

I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

    Like Abba

Uncool to like both acts in your youth, but then you grow the fuck up and realise that both wrote timeless bangers

Back in the day I dismissed the Carpenters as pop crap, but those SY tributes got me to review my take on her.

As a young punk I despised the smarmy pop.

I have since appreciated that voice. Same with Neil Diamond

I have a nostalgic soft spot for The Carpenters too, and don't mean to shit on this thread, but it just wouldn't be complete without this...

In an odd, full circle kinda way, Todd Haynes did some video work with Sonic Youth.

We had a weird neighbor who thought of herself as some sort of rock impresario. She would set up parties on her lawn of rock bands she liked, complete with a stage and sound system. Big hair 80s type bands. She never invited any of the neighbors and would have these bands play past the 10:00 curfew until we would complain.

She also had a set of outdoor speakers from which she would blast, yes, The Carpenters, ABBA, BeeGees, etc.

One time while she blared "Close To You", I drove my car with a nice Bose sound system up to our property line and cranked the original "Larks Tongue In Aspic" by King Crimson with all the doors and tailgate open.

    She never blasted music again.
