For sure, that’s why I’m staying 600 miles north unless I am absolutely certain I am needed. That area will have enough problems without a bunch of do-gooder Yankees like me running around clogging things up.

Thanks! He is way south of you, between Macon and the Alabama line. Thomaston is the nearest big city. So normally I-75 is quickest, but I am thinking with the predicted devastation it would be best to come down through Alabama and enter Georgia from the west.

Hopefully she is fine in the morning and I can turn around and go back north to my island paradise.

All good, eye passed well to the east of them. She never lost electricity or cell service. Her driveway is under water from a flash flood.

Hospital where my brother is at lost power as the storm passed and went on generators, but main power was restored quickly and my brother slept through it all.

For now, I am holding here and do not plan to go further. But I am going to stay here until I hear more about her driveway.

Life just went FUBAR for my brother. Eye of the hurricane will go right over them, expected to still be classified as a hurricane.

He woke up in severe pain and went to the ER. His gall bladder turned gangrene and they did abdominal surgery just now and he has to stay overnight, and possibly another night due to the risk of infection from the gangrene. His wife, who has dementia, is at home in the basement.

Surgery was successful so I am not worried about him.

But I am very worried about his wife. He is worried about her too, but nothing he can do. She called in tears asking me to promise to take of her if my brother dies. Her dementia is still in the early stages, but she is very confused about all of this.

I loaded 2 chainsaws, 2 jerrycans of gas, 4 cases of water, a solar panel with Jackery, and a bunch of cash in case credit cards don’t work. I’ve got a Bronco, so hopefully with the chainsaw and a winch I can cut my way in and get to her if needed. They live in a very rural area, miles of dirt roads to get to them. Not many neighbors.

I departed Wisconsin and will stage in central Illinois tonight. If she is in trouble tomorrow morning I will continue south. Hopefully she is fine and I can turn around.

So much flooding and downed trees around here.

Unfortunately 6 people in the state have died so far from this storm.

People attempting to drive their Nissan Altimas through door-handle-high moving flood waters never cease to dumbfound me.

Report this morning was water 12' up the stilts of my mothers house on Cedar Key. Suspect the two neighbors houses (not elevated) are gone or will be condemned.

Crushing for the small town. Until 2022 there had been 1 major hurricane to hit it in recorded meteorological history -- in 1896. There have now been 2 in two years. Idalia had a storm surge of 7'. This one was probably in the 18' range. A week ago two restaurants burnt down on Dock street. Now every other spot to eat, or get food has been totally drowned. Two months before the start of their tourist season. Just brutal.

My brother is doing well, good spirits. They are going to release him from the hospital later today.

Sister is at the house, but driveway is still under rushing water, so she can’t go pick him up at the hospital.

He can’t get to the house either. Hopefully the water level drops.

With everyone’s agreement that I am not needed, I checked out of my motel and am turning around and headed home.

I’m tired, did not sleep very well last night. What a wild ride.

This thing wrecked Pinellas county (st pete and the barrier islands). Really no wind damage, almost all water. Usually, you say there is a lot of rebuilding going to happen, but I don't really know if that's the case anymore.

Funny thing that the insurance companies all seem put their money behind climate change being real.

Taking the Dog on a long walk to survey the damage. We are very lucky as our neighborhood is on top of a hill but there's still 100 year old hardwoods down all over taking power lines with them.

Neighbor sent me this article that the national papers picked up that shows pics of the Peachtree Battle neighborhood on the other side of Peachtree St (the Broadway of ATL that runs along the spine of a ridge S to N all along the Piedmont) from us; they weren't so lucky.

I know a lot of people in these homes, awful stuff. I hope they have flood insurance.

Been clearing roads all day. Somehow never lost power. Trees down everywhere. French Broad is at record height. Catawba not far off. Water crested the dam on lake lure and narrowly missed a total failure. I-40 washed out.

If funding for rebuilding is coming g from FEMA, they will likely have to rebuild following the brand new floodplain regulations. Generally, everything will need to be elevated several feet higher than the current mapped 100-yr floodplain. Off the top of my head, I can’t recall how the new rule applies to coastal flooding.

Reports from Asheville and Brevard are really bad. Catastrophic damage. No water, power, cell service. My dad headed into the mountains from Charleston on Tuesday ahead of the storm and now he’s unreachable. Crazy shit, busy signals everywhere. They’re no more prepared for this kind of thing than they are in VT. Called the sheriff’s office and at the time they were basically trapped due to downed trees. Deputies were too busy clearing trees to do any welfare checks, but said not to come down because so many roads are closed and it’s unsafe. I’m sure he’s fine, but would be nice to hear from him.
