Be careful with the lao gan ma spicy chili crisp. That stuff is pure msg. If you eat too much, it's easy to burn out on it. MSG is to salt what crack is to cocaine.
I mostly use it as an ingredient. I like to mix it in with gochujang or doubanjiang paste to make a spicy stirfry sauce. Or, I'll add a little to the standard smashed cucumber salad dressing for some extra zip. Or, toss some into the wok with ginger and garlic to finish dry fried vegetables once they get done.

My mother was straits chinese ( straits of Malacca ) of Perenekan background, the men were refered to as Baba and the women were Nonya, the women including/ especially my mother could cook & sew like you would not believe
In spite of that I identify as a white kid from Burnaby and I buy my sauce at Safeway

Are you familiar with Uncle Roger?
He's the creation of Malay Chinese comic, Nigel Ng. He's a perpetually cranky, aggressively critical chinese "uncle" and the highlight of uncle roger's life is pointing out other people's flaws in a ridiculous Cantonese accent. Especially when these flaws involve western cooking personalities appropriating Chinese cuisine. He's got 9 million subscribers mostly by kicking the shit out of Jamie Oliver.

Certain rices produce desirable results if you boil like pasta and strain. There's a jasmine rice that I really like steamed OR boiled. It depends on what I am using the rice for. Also, if you can't steam rice to perfection in a pot on a burner, you shouldn't be allowed in a kitchen. Rice cookers are for people with limited space for a stove.
I lasted all of about 60 seconds with Uncle Rogers schtick.
But yes, every one should own a rice cooker.
And that chilli crisp is a wonderful condiment or addition to foods.
Obviously she could cook rice without a rice cooker but Mom always had one
and no collander ever you know La

well its part of uncle Rogers shtick where he goes off on Jamie oliver or Gordon Ramsey or any white person cooking rice about their methods and then exclaims Hai ya !
I keep trying to remember if my mom ever said Haiya but I think it might be swearing
As pointed out there is a rice cooker in every kitchen in Asia you know La,
I kind of wondered why these people didn't cook rice manualy but they don't

I'm fucking sick of people telling me I need a rice cooker. The last thing I want on my counter is another specialized gadget. I have too much clutter as it is. The cabinets are all full and I'm not storing a rice cooker in the basement because I don't want to have to go get it. I have a typical American stove taking up a large amount of space. The cupboards have pots and pans. Why not use what's already in my kitchen to do something that is basic and easy??? I used to cook steamed rice on a stovetop everyday in a restaurant and could get it perfect every time without measuring the rice or the water in a measuring cup. I measure it now because I'm older and out of practice. It still comes out perfect. It's fucking easy. And as far as colanders go, there are types of rice that actually come out really fucking good if you boil them. Shit one of the Jasmine rices I like has boiling instructions and no steaming instructions. It's great both ways, but produces a very different result each way. The way I cook it depends on what I am serving it with. I also don't buy Uncle Ben's unless I need rice to put my phone in because I got it wet. How much of the target audience for "you need a rice cooker" is eating Uncle Ben's instant rice???
It’s not that you need a rice cooker it’s that your disdain for people that use them is stupid. I don’t have a rice cooker anymore because I don’t cook rice in that style anymore or very often. It’s not because I don’t grasp the utility of a rice cooker.

This is heavy stuff
crab in my shoe mouth
Rice and it’s cooking method is a heavy topic

The benefit of a rice cooker is not necessarily the ease of cooking, it’s that the rice stays perfect, warm, not dried out, not soggy - for literally all day if not multiple days.
Which makes sense if you eat rice multiple times a day. It doesn’t make sense if you don’t.
…End of discussion…

I don't appreciate Uncle Roger telling me I need a rice cooker because I'm white.
