Young people give me hope. I tend to be of the opinion that the world is absolutely going to hell. But then I get gobsmacked by the younger generation just coming of age and I realize that the world will be alright.

Looking at the kids in our little village, I have to agree. They are out doing streamside restoration, feeding homeless and becoming “buddies” for elderly folks, among a lot of other service.

But the event that got to me the most was when a young lady approached me in the grocery store and asked “would you make a small donation to help save the life of a dying child?” It was The Sparrows Club raising money for the family of a kid with life-threatening disease. I told her that was the best pitch I’d ever heard.

This is what I am talking about. My generation had Senior Ditch Day where we went to the city beach and had a daytime kegger while blasting Free Bird on our 8-tracks. The new generation has Senior Give Back Day where they roam around town in a big pack with rakes and leaf bags and clean up elderly peoples lawns. This generation gives me hope.
