The golden bullet that extends the ball into the hitch broke on my rack (9 years old) last week. I had to use tie downs to secure the rack to the hitch. They're sending me some replacement parts.

1up - Not all they're cracked up to be?

I just saw this thread and could go on and on regarding the various setups I've had for bikes (and skis/boats) over since the 80's with Yakima & now 1Up racks AND cars, trucks, toppers, pop-up trailer roofs & breaking rear trailer bumpers with receiver hitches.

I've had a 1Up hitch rack (1 1/4") since they first started making them and still use it with the added swing arm now....and always boat or ratchet strap the bikes. I beefed it up for our eBikes and have had no problems, but there is some undesirable wobble at times. Especially with the swing arm, coupled with the 1 1/4" to 2" hitch 'shim'. Never have I been concerned with a failure and 1Up has always been responsive for questions and customer service.

Due to the failing trailer bumper approach, for a while I used 1Up van trays across the bed of the truck so I could keep the bed free. After getting a Tonneau cover and an Adarack system, I cut out (2) of the van tray troughs to seat the front tires better, 3d printed some rack rail attachment 'wedges' and Jerry rigged a removable rear wheel system to sit on the cover. Remove it when I take the bikes off and have bed access. With a couple boat straps, the bikes do not budge and are not dangling off of the rear trailer bumper out of sight.

Edit: .....and as an added benefit, I drilled holes in the rack supports to mount my bench bike stand for a bomber maintenance option.

Does anyone other than 1up do a single tray that can easily and quickly add 1 or 2 additional trays? Would like to have a single for my after work rides and then add the 2 trays on for weekends with the family

You literally just described what’s great about 1up racks.
…….. plus durability, reliability, simplicity, serviceability, warranty, aesthetics, and lack of plastic or rusted steel. There is no rack sexier than a single 1up folded up against your bumper.

I did 1up roof racks for my Outback. I know everyone goes hitch now, but the thing came with a 1.25" hitch, and I go in and out of the back of my car a lot for work. I was impressed with how heavy duty and low profile they are. Even with the stupid integrated rails they barely stick out and it looks like I should be able to throw my ski pod on without taking 1 off, too. Awesome.
They are legit heavy. I kinda wonder if they are messing with my cars handling. Or does the 15 to 19 generation Outback just have a point where it gets tippy, especially with the 17" wheels. I mean, it's got raised suspension; it's not a sports car. The Impreza wagon was a little tippy too and I had way lighter racks on it. A tree had other ideas for my personal transportation and gear hauling.
    No longer stuck.

That's what I figured, just with some of the updates on other racks discussed here vs the 1up ,was curious if there was any improved alternative in a 1 bike easily swapped to 2 or 3 bike system regularly now

Decided to pull the trigger on the 1Up. Since bike 2 or 3 will vary between a 24+ and a 29 depending on who's riding, leaning toward a Single Heavy Duty with 2 add ons.

Question for those that regularly switch between 1-3 bikes with add-ons and have the easy pull handle. Can the handle be left on for 2 bikes and then the 3rd add on be put on without having to disassemble the handle ? From looking on the site I'm not seeing how going from 1 or 2 to 3 is particularly usable with the EX Pull ,but 3 bikes without it seems like a nightmare

IME the EZ pull handle isn't really necessary for two bikes. I would set up the EZ pull for three bikes and then just add the handle for those times you add the third tray. You won't be able to leave the entire EZ pull assembly installed with only two bikes, but it's relatively painless to install/uninstall the handle after the initial setup (adds probably 5 minutes).

My 1up was stolen last night. It was ulocked to the hitch but they took it apart at the main pivot and left the hitch part. Posting as an fyi and contemplating what’s next.

I’ll have to post how my mechanic “took my rack off…”
