    27.5 in 2024

I'll start this off with the fact that I'm a broke grad student. My old 2014/15 Turner Burner has probably about run its course, rear end flexes a ton even with new bushings. I've got a bunch of good new parts on it. I'm worried that it is going to break soon and that I'll be bikeless for the summer. Knowing all that is there a frame out there that I could transfer most/all of my parts to that will be an upgrade without breaking the bank. I'm thinking something like a used 2020ish transition or something similar that's fairly inexpensive (>$1000). What do the mags recommend?

I still have my latest gen 4.0 RFX for sale. Large. It would surely take most/all of your parts.

As long as your fork has a tapered steerer and your hubs have a boost / 148 spacing, you should be able to transfer most, if not all of your parts over. Decent chance you'll need a new bottom bracket to fit whatever the new frame uses, and you might need a longer rear brake hose since new bikes tend to be longer than older ones.

Decent 27.5" trail bike options off the top of my head: Transition Scout, Pivot Mach 6 or Shadowcat, Santa Cruz 5010 (newer versions are mullet). In the 2020-ish timeframe, plenty of companies had both 27.5" and 29" versions of some bikes too (Specialized Stumpjumper, for example).

Scout complete bikes are on a pretty good sale right now. Definitely doesn't hit your $1k budget though.

Not a look at me cool bike but rides pretty good and can be had on the cheap-Intense Tracer 275c.

Is there a FS thread? I'm praying that I don't have to buy a new frame this summer but I'm preparing for if I have to.

Fork has a tapered steerer, and the hubs are hadley and can be converted to boost/148 easily. It would be wild if a newer bike needed a longer hose than this Turner with the 17.5" chainstays, I guess the reach is a lot longer on newer bikes tho, might be a wash, I'm not actually sure I had to cut the hose shorter when I got the Maguras.

If you want almost free, I've got a large DW-Link Burner frame from about 2013. I bought it in '15, rode it a lot for the first few years, then barely rode it for a few more. In 2019 put it in the corner of my basement, and slowly pilfered parts from it.

Those frames are awesome. I'd take Ted's offer

That is a smoking deal. Only S5 available though, that's probably fine I'm 6'2"/189cm.

I agree that the DW turner that Ted's got is a great frame, its the same one I've got just a size down.

This one's also available in an S4 (although at 6'2", you could easily run the S5)

Note that it's a mullet, so you'd need a 29" fork and front wheel. I bet you could rustle those up for pretty cheap though.

Any reason why I couldn't I just run a 20mm longer fork with the 27.5 wheel and keep the geometry basically the same? I have a 160mm 27.5 36 on my burner.

Hell, that frame is so cheap you could probably get a fork and wheel and still hit the $1k budget. Is Manitou still blowing out Mezzers?

    You'd definitely die.

Or more realistically, it'd just handle a bit weird. The headtube would get a fair bit steeper deeper in the travel, and your bb might get pretty low on bottom outs.

You'd need to run a 29er fork with 27.5 wheel, at 20mm longer than specified travel. And like Toast says, your geometry would change more through travel than you'd otherwise. You could kinda adjust that by setting sag to be as if you were running the stock travel (i.e. 20% of 160 instead of 20% of 180).

I'll add to the confusion and offer up my 2017 Canfield Balance XL. Sized more like a modern-day L with a 476mm reach. If you like short chainstays and a low BB, it's perfect. It barely gets ridden now, and will be redundant in 2 months. Only reason I haven't sold it is because I don't want to let go of the Hadley hubs (142 rear)! Thinking $500 with a JadeX, and it'll pedal better than a Status (and you'd have the bonus of not being on a Specialized).
