That's a nice narrative, but since Vail offered Epic and Alterra the Ikon, day passes have gone from $50 in 2008 at Northstar, Kirkwood, Heavenly to $160 by 2010.

Anyway $31k per season is ridiculous, the billiionaires driving out the millionaires.

As long as that narrative survives, we will continue losing buying power.

Would you rather have a Snowbird Seven Summits pass for $31k or Ski Utah Gold Pass for $10k? A US Ski Team Gold Pass would also be sweet but they don't even list its price.....

    Sad.

Not sure why they picked the guy with a sinus infection to narrate that video. The Europe vs. U.S. thing is kind of a pointless comparison though. There's ~4000 ski areas in Europe vs ~800 in North America, along with a ton of other regulatory differences.

I'm not defending Vail's high day ticket prices. I'm just saying it's not really anything new or surprising. Vail's model for at least the last 25 years has been to sell relatively inexpensive season passes alongside very expensive day tickets.

It is new as of 2010. Some SLT ticket prices went from 50 to 160.
Lots of shit is skyrocketing in price, all the stuff the very wealthy like.

I used to ski for $1.50 to $5.00 in the midwest. My midweek pass at Alpental in 1981 was $60.

Normalizing this stuff will just make it worse.

Sure, and in 1981, the average house cost $68,000, and the average car cost around $7,000. Unsurprisingly, things have gotten more expensive in the last 40 years. Also worth noting that the average annual salary was about $12,500 back then.

Depending on how many days I ski this season, I'll end up paying around $15 / day with my season pass. That's pretty damn reasonable.

had to google it, in case anyone else cares

The Gold Pass is unrestricted with no blackout dates and grants access to over 200 resorts throughout the U.S. including Park City Mountain, Aspen, Telluride, Mammoth and Killington. You may use your Gold Pass for up to 50 days at each participating resort each season. The Gold Pass is fully transferable.

Just heard there are only 45 Seven Summits Passes, and they are not a guaranteed next tram deal. They allow 35 people to cut the line each tram. If there are too many patrol, classes, etc ahead of you then you wait for the next one, but you can get 3 early ones starting at 8:00.

Pretty sure that was the Gold Medallion I saw in the mid mountain Aspen bar.

    It was shiny.

10 is not 40, but keep up the justifications and ignoring the fundamental point that the average American has sharply lost purchasing power, especially when it comes to skiing, not to mention education.

I believe there are 100 of us, at least that's how many lockers there are in the room. Next time I'm enjoying a eucalyptus steam session I will ask Amanda (the towel girl) if she knows the exact number. I will say, however, that the apres ski cookies this year aren't of the same caliber as years prior.

I had one skiing Breck a few (10?) years ago. I had no idea what it was. The kids I was skiing with were shook.

Thanks Mudfoot for the info I was looking for. 45 x 31K is $1,395,000!

When I first started skiing Snowbird regularly in 1986 they would put 115 ish on the tram with very few people coming through the back door plus they would run it at 10m/s (22mph). Now days they put 80 ish on the tram and let 35 through the back door so only about 45 regular people make it on a powder day plus they only run it around 8 m/s (18mph). I hardly ever ski the tram anymore unless it is a midweek groomer day when there is short line and few people coming through the back door.

The new tram does suck but I rarely see more than five or ten cutting the line.

If it’s more than about a two boat wait I’m on Zoom/Little Cloud these days though.

Activity historically reserved as a niche pastime for the wealthy elite creates a niche product aimed at the wealthy elite; and Buster yells at clouds. This thread is phenomenal.

Sounds like it’s priced below market value if they aren’t even taking names for the waiting list.

The info I have came through a member who describes his locker as a double, so maybe that explains the 100 number, but I don't know for sure. My info is second hand. I also know of families that come to the Bird regularly and pay thousands $ to hirer an instructor to ski with them just so they can cut the lift lines and sometimes have a group of more than 10 people. Money doesn't have to stand in line.

Speaking of having more money than legs. CMH lodges generally run one copter with 4 groups of 10 clients. The base price for a week, not including extra vertical, is now around $13,500. I've heard that they often only have two groups left by Wednesday. Imagine spending that kind of scratch and not even flying after 3 days.

Yep, two boat wait tops. According to a friend who knows people (and I'm pretty sure is a mutual acquaintance, BN) the rumor is someone f'ed up during the ordering process and forgot to account for gear weight when they gave the specs to Doppelmayr. Whoops....

That sounds about right. Extra stupid though because it’s common knowledge the old one could hold 125 in the summer but only 100 in the winter for that exact reason.

To their credit they seem to be loading more people and running it in higher winds more consistently this year.
