Yes, I know it’s TGR. I’m typically in the back country 90% of the time, but ended up with a seasons pass along with some free time last winter, and while I had a blast all over the hill, was looking for a little more entertainment on the clear, cold, low tide periods. I remember coming across an article somewhere in social media land last year about someone in Jackson Hole, I think, doing over 120,000 feet in a day. Also reading the racing ski thread in tech talk, and it got the mind wondering if something like that would be possible and what would it take to do over 100000 ft in a day. It was fun, adding up the numbers and giving it a try at the home mountain, Big White. Not the best hill to try it at, but was a fun day.
Perfect conditions for an attempt on a cold day in March. Fill the pockets with snacks, stashed a water bottle by the lift line, and jumped on the first chair. First run, enjoying the empty hill and icy, fast conditions, I hit the one roller with way more speed than expected, which resulted being in the backseat, in the air and crashing at 110 km an hour. Not the best start. Super sore, but thought I would try and keep going.
Things warmed up, and even though it was spring break, thankfully, the crowds didn’t show up and was able to do about 32 runs of 2362 vertical feet and before that lift shut down for the day and had to head over to the night skiing area. I that’s when things became a lot harder. Lift was slower, crowds were a bigger, legs were tired, and the main run was not as steep. Even though night skiing lasted another couple of hours, pulled the plug as I was pretty sure I was over 100,000. After a 20 minute boot pack to connect to a run that would take me back to the car, had an amazing sunset run back down
To be honest, really didn’t think I would enjoy the day and thought it would be silly, type two fun, just a crazy challenge, but in the end was so much fun with high-speed thrills all day long. Really learning a run and where you can push it. Ended up with over 102,000 feet and extremely sore legs the next day.
I remember reading a thread about an all day mogul run event somewhere in the states which sounds a lot harder than this, but might be fun to have a thread for long, fast days?
