100,000 vertical day. Long fast days thread.

Yes, I know it’s TGR. I’m typically in the back country 90% of the time, but ended up with a seasons pass along with some free time last winter, and while I had a blast all over the hill, was looking for a little more entertainment on the clear, cold, low tide periods. I remember coming across an article somewhere in social media land last year about someone in Jackson Hole, I think, doing over 120,000 feet in a day. Also reading the racing ski thread in tech talk, and it got the mind wondering if something like that would be possible and what would it take to do over 100000 ft in a day. It was fun, adding up the numbers and giving it a try at the home mountain, Big White. Not the best hill to try it at, but was a fun day.

Perfect conditions for an attempt on a cold day in March. Fill the pockets with snacks, stashed a water bottle by the lift line, and jumped on the first chair. First run, enjoying the empty hill and icy, fast conditions, I hit the one roller with way more speed than expected, which resulted being in the backseat, in the air and crashing at 110 km an hour. Not the best start. Super sore, but thought I would try and keep going.

Things warmed up, and even though it was spring break, thankfully, the crowds didn’t show up and was able to do about 32 runs of 2362 vertical feet and before that lift shut down for the day and had to head over to the night skiing area. I that’s when things became a lot harder. Lift was slower, crowds were a bigger, legs were tired, and the main run was not as steep. Even though night skiing lasted another couple of hours, pulled the plug as I was pretty sure I was over 100,000. After a 20 minute boot pack to connect to a run that would take me back to the car, had an amazing sunset run back down

To be honest, really didn’t think I would enjoy the day and thought it would be silly, type two fun, just a crazy challenge, but in the end was so much fun with high-speed thrills all day long. Really learning a run and where you can push it. Ended up with over 102,000 feet and extremely sore legs the next day.
I remember reading a thread about an all day mogul run event somewhere in the states which sounds a lot harder than this, but might be fun to have a thread for long, fast days?

I think the mogul event is at Heavenly down the Gunbarrel run. Not sure if it still exists.

I tracked vert the last few years. Since my home hill, Montana Snowbowl has all slow lifts, I created a spreadsheet to track and additionally side the math on most vertical ride per chairlift riding minute. It became a good way to get in shape during early season.

Nice. I've always kinda wanted to do something like that, but never had the motivation to actually do it.

My boy did this last year, 102K and change at the home hill also last March, right about in the middle of skiing 109 straight Jan-May. Pretty much you need a fast high speed with a good vertical drop to pull it off, and a bonus being one that is also open to night skiing. He's in his early 20's so no sore legs for him though the boredom got to him eventually so he quit with another 90min on the clock, figures he could have pushed 120K if he'd stuck with it. He did track vert last year to 4.3million.

If you don't turn, your leg don't get tired.

Oh wow, thats an impressive ammount of vert for a season. No wonder his legs were fine! Ha. Solid work. That was at Alpental?

Lowagriz... Thats next level going to spreadsheets... Nice. Not much of a math guy, just picked the lift with the most vert and figured out the fastest run down. Strava helped with the rest. Was aproximitly 9 minute chair lift ride and an average of 2:45 to get down the run skied the most. Did a couple other runs to break it up, but stuck with Blue Ribbon on the Gem Lake chair at Big White.

the 60yr old fixed grip chair at the local hill is what slows down any kind of atempt to rack up vert

Yeah, Alpental. He got a little bit of a late start that day and was working for the ski team setting up and tearing down in the evening so had a couple laps on a slow double but most all of it was on Ch1, ~80 laps or something. I went out and skied with him that day for a couple hrs in the evening but it got cold and a little busy so I flagged out after 2hrs or so and left him to it. Funny thing was one of the ski area employees noticed him doing it and then went out repeated it the next day and hit 108,000 to set the record for most vert at Alp in a day, so the boy was a little annoyed he didn't stick it out for the last hr.

He had also hoped to break 100mph down at Mt Bachelor late April, but got shut down by the speed police after hitting 90mph on an empty warm up run under Pine Marten on some really fast 212cm sg skis. He was going to put his speed suit on and give it a go but got called over by patrol at the top and asked to kindly knock it the fuck off or lose his privilages.

Kudos to you for hitting 100K too, that takes some mental toughness along with the ski fitness.

yeah that ^^ was a thing up here 10 yrs ago, it started as a ride the chair & ski down event

the extreme part was doing it without the chair but you were allowed to ski all day and all night

about 20 people skied uphill the whole 27000+ but the event died when everybody who wanted to do it had done it

then we just got high skinned up at midnight and shot roman candles at each other down the run

It was type 2 fun but it sucked after that first time you did it , AngleParkingOnly did it twice

I'll have to show this thread to my kids. 4 years ago they lapped the same tiny double chair 50 times just so they could say they did it. Challenges like this are always cool and will always be a part of skiing. Thanks for sharing. I wonder if I can get 100,000.

There was (is?) the vertical challenge event at Mad River Glen which is to get the most laps down the single lift line in a day. Vert is limited by the speed of the lift, but it can be a brutal run to hammer down depending on conditions.

Sounds like a fun day you had!

Yea, thats where I met you. Pretty sure it was by the DJ booth where everyone was on skis, on the dance floor. Would love to go back. Such a great event.

BFD Thanks... Must have been someone else though. Would love to check out Valdez, but have never been out that way yet.

Lee And a tip of second hand, touque to you and your early season turns! (checking out the cabin with sheri end of the month and will keep you posted... see if someething could work this year!)

Thats so impressive. Sure, nothing beats pow days, but fun to push things and play the number games when conditions aren't the best. Sould be no problem with the right conditions and access to the right lift/run combo.

That and Wildcat had a fundraiser every year where participants did 100,000 ft. Wildcat had a great lift for it but the run they closed off required a fair amount of turning active steering on winding terrain.

JHC. That's ridiculous. I've hotlapped Ch1 for 20 laps in a little under 3 hours at night for "training" and my legs were burning. 4x that takes some legs of steel.

    Nice work.

There was some chatter between myself and one of the former JH vert record holders of trying to take back the title this year.

How about 273k? In about 3hours of actual ski time? Obviously a different beast than any of us going out to rip laps, but crushing nonetheless

Strong work Al. My legs and back ache thinking about. In revy i always liked getting a few 50+ vert days in on a good pow day. The most being 26 stoke chairs and a long run down. Couldn't imagine 100k. No chance here in the east with 853ft vert fixed grip. 45 laps was the most. Pretty heinous conditions the last few laps got too sketchy

When Big Sky put in the first high speed quad they had a 100k in a day event. Closed tippy’s, got to jump the line. DH boards and done before 3. Totally different animal w those parameters lined up. I don’t think anybody would Greenlight something like that in these times.
