It's all bs in a normal year meaning uphill not affected by construction we would've have gotten lots of fitness laps by now and have a good "lay of the land" obviously anything below lower Nash would be "sporty" but that's the typical price of admission. There's enough snow up top to send rollen and yet summit is slow rolling everything imo because of staffing . They already got everyone's money up front and the Kittitas tax structure makes running the other areas more profitable.

I got an email saying we will get a status update on alpental lessons by next Wednesday, hopefully this storm delivers. I prepped my rock skis in case they open this weekend.

Alpental never opens as early as they should. In my view they are plain lazy.

Let's hope the long-term forecast comes to fruition

You guys just don’t understand the complexity of the terrain and what it takes to open it and control it at Alpental……

I remember skiing lower fan during the non-winter of 14/15 (my first in the state) and having it be far sportier (in terms of rocks and trees sticking out) than anything ive skied thus far at central. And its also pretty common knowledge that Alpental has a more European approach to hazards, and if they just didnt accept Ikon passes until coverage was fully filled in, i dont think there would be any problems.

I really think safety should be the priority. If there isn't enough snow to be safe for everyone and their respective abilities, leave it closed.

Does any other ski area in the world require a 2 m base to open?

I wish they would stay open later in the season. Never understood why they close when the base is at its deepest. Love me some late spring laps.

Wait- Doesn’t the Forest Service determine the close dates because they are at least partially on FS land? I’m still getting used to not being in the sticks of Montana, but I know the local FS office makes the call out there. But we got them Griz to worry about….

Looks like I’ll be gambling on a baker run this weekend. If any mags want to show a first time mag around the resort Saturday I’ll be exploring amidst the (hopefully) heavy dumpage.

They can do whatever they want here as far as I know. Not beholden like Bridger was/is.

I remember my first Cinco de Mayo was a 12" powder day with a 250" base at the top of 2 and they closed the next day.

I know the crowds start to thin and J1s need to head home down south, but I think there would still be enough business most years to stay open at least a few weeks longer than they do. If only on weekends.

Honestly, Cinco has gotten so out of control, I'm not surprised Ski Lifts Inc doesn't want to be seen as condoning all the wasted assholes.

Yeah, I can understand avoiding the party atmosphere. I just want to keep skiing when there's still tons of snow up top.

One day someone will invent something that will allow you to walk uphill on your skis.

And here I'd thought the ability to consider other points of view a purvey of youth.
    Who knew?

Then someone will put up a sign that says "No uphill travel".

It was 2008 iirc that Alp rolled weekends thru Memorial Day.

Do you think it’s declining skier visits or some sort of fuck you to skiers?

    all about them dollars

if it were profitable to keep it open, I'm sure they would

people like us don't contribute enough to the high margin stuff at the ski area, so when those marks dry up everything winds down (rentals, retail, food)
