kinda wild how A-OK everyone is with killing iran's top scientists and their families. Imagine if the lead thinkers at boeing, lockheed, raytheon, general dynamics had bombs dropped on their house in suburban sunnyvale, CA and the rest of the world was just like "oh well, i guess they shouldnt have been involved in the science behind building weapons we dont like but produce ourselves". Kinda crazy.
I and probably very few people are ok with these killings but I am desensitized to all the horrible things Israel is doing. And US and EU are doing nothing, while everybody is supporting Ukraine and helping it defeat Russia.
Maybe it's because Palestinians are brown and Ukrainian are white?
And how about the Israeli plan to create a concentration camp in part of Gaza?

Why is it crazy when Iran is directly responsible for killing thousands of Americans and thousands of Israelis in the war Iran started? Do you imagine a world where one side gets to kill the other, and the other doesn't fight back?Originally Posted by californiagrown

CAgrown you have had some pretty reasonable discussions on this thread but you have been off the damned deep end the last few hot takes. What gives?
Are you fucking serious about the scientists? If we could have, we would have blown up Nazi and Japanese sciensts working on their nuclear bomb projects. They would have killed our Manhattan project scientists if they could have.
Why in the world would they be off limits in an existential war?

These were scientists that were killed, not military leaders or soldiers (who i agree are fair game)... hopefully folks don't start thinking that our civilian workforce is fair game as long as its connected to the military industrial complex.
Scientists working directly in a military nuclear weapons program. They weren't meteorologists or oceanographers. They were working directly in military operations in a military capacity for a country in an armed conflict. For that reason they are in the same category as military leaders and soldiers
Eh, my takes arent really off the deepend. Just pointing out that you and a few others seem all to content to gloss over the morality of recent military/government actions becasue its easier to just platitude that War is Hell, and What Else are We/They Gonna Do. I think it is a very slippery slope to start using the ends to justify the means, and you guys are sliding.
We are not at war with iran. Period, full stop. I have iranian coworkers, Iranians can still visit the USA as tourists, the USA still even trades with Iran.
We are not at war with Iran.
Why is it considered A-OK to bomb iranian civilian scientist in their home with their families? Given, the USA didn't do the actual bombing... but we were certainly close partners in it. Seems odd to be so complicit when we arent actually at war with the country. I guess knowledge will get you killed.
That’s a “fun” distinction to make and line to draw. Lots of “what if” occupations and jobs, especially in the world of scientist military contractors, where one can argue for them to fall on either side of that line.
The Unites States doesn't have to declare war against Iran to engage in anticipatory self-defense. The Islamic republic of Iran, the regime, has attacked Americans for decades. Given that fact there is no requirement to take another hit from either a conventional or nuclear weapon when it can effectively defend itself by acting preemptively. The attack doesn't have to be imminent. The main thing is whether the adversary has intent and is acquiring the capability. Both of which Iran demonstrated
Did the US just kill a bunch of scientists? If this is in regard to the bunker buster strikes, i’d say trump should have gotten congressional authorization but he basically told iran he was going to bomb anyway.
don’t worry, they told us they were going to attack our base in qatar and he was good with it.

Setting aside the fact senior, not mid, level scientists were killed in the targeted strikes, you do know countries like Russia and China, Iran too, target American and European civilians working in defense, right?Originally Posted by California child

WHo do you think is gonna fill the role of the senior level scientists? Next up! So, its really just attacking the military industrial complex's braintrust (and their families). Raytheon managers (and their kids) watch the fuck out!
Ruhroh. Did you really just justify civilian assasinations because... the russians do it too?!?! since fucking when should we be staking our ethics to the russians?
Refer to post #6638 above which already answered part of your question. As for filling the role, that was discussed earlier in this thread. Israel's strike targeted regime hardliners and hardliner scientists. These were people got their start in the Iran-Iraq war sending children into minefields to clear mines. Now, we'll have to wait and see whether a new younger generation leaders wants to pursue the same course of action.
Also, too, as long as we're spitballing on where to draw a line imagining a “what if” scenarios ...

You sound bad for fantasizing about killing Americans you have a political disagreement with

This whole discussion is fucking retarded. The US didn't blow up Iranian nuke scientists. Israel did.
Israel is in an existential war with Iran that would go to the next level with a nuclear Iran. Really so would it be for the US. So yes, justifiable.
