Is there a new Barryvox S (Sept 2023)

I just received an email with a link that's marked "Barryvox S2" and when I go to the Mammut website it says "The new Barryvox® S has a large receiving bandwidth and an effective search strip width of 70 meters." Some of the marketing copy sounds like it has some new features but I'm not sure if that's just marketing talk for the things I'm already familiar with.

This PDF looks like a new homologation test was performed in 2022 which would be after the Barryvox S that I carry was released and maybe in the right time frame for something released for this season although I would think it would be dated earlier this year rather than last summer.

Can anyone clarify? This might be a good reason to buy a new one and pass my current Barryvox S to my wife to replace her current BD beacon.

    Interesting!
I've emailed my Mammut contact, who is really good on technical details, and ... he's no longer at Mammut.

So I used the website contact form. I'll let you know if I hear anything.

There is an S2 being developed, I did some testing with it last winter - but hearing it won't be released this year, potentially next fall.

I heard back almost immediately from Mammut.
On the difference between the Barryvox vs the Barryvox S.
Which was not the question I asked.
So I provided further clarification on my question.
    Have not heard back.
Makes me miss my contact there, sigh, he was great...

I just now received a more informed reply from Mammut, which essentially confirms the post by Z.

Thank you for digging in and following up with Mammut for answers. It will be interesting to see what shows up next year.

I played with them, did some dryland single target searches.

It won't be released to 2024. I put hands on.

    Biggest changes:
    Thinner
    Lighter
    Bluetooth for firmware updates
Bluetooth for buried target beacon control send-on/off in training mode (make your own beacon park) and the beacon uses the respiration motion "pulse" sensor to detect probe strikes and tell the evaluator's phone!
S2 has a higher resolution and higher contrast screen
    New arrows
S2 loses "100m range+ audio only mode" while still having 70m+ range gaining
S2 easier UI for things like Pro group check or switching back from rescue send to send.

Learning curve for previous Barryvox users will be tiny.

    Any other questions?

I got my hands on these last week as well but I don't have anything to add that Summit didn't already mention. My impression is that it is a welcome upgrade to an already good transceiver that will be comfortable for current users to switch to.

It has a scan mode to show distances on multiple burials (new Pieps has this feature too)

"the beacon uses the respiration motion "pulse" sensor to detect probe strikes and tell the evaluator's phone!"

Can someone unpack this for me? What does this mean?

It has a shock sensor in it to detect if you hit it with a probe so you can make your own beacon park.

bummer as I was looking at this to upgrade my current beacon, might wait a season for some real world reviews before I pull the trigger now

Was going to replace my Barryvox S with an S2 at some point, but this isn't a great look. At least they are getting ahead of it?

I bought a new Barryvox S2 last month because I needed to replace a quirky Barry S, and saw the email this morning. I filled out the form right away and received confirmation that they were passing it along to the proper department. Wonder how long before they send me a return label? I'll follow up when they do.

FWIW, I thought the new unit was nice. Thinner and lighter, larger screen.

yeah would be great to hear how your experience goes. i probably wont get mine for a few weeks and then will have to immediately send it out.

i appreciate that they got ahead of it as well and the way theyre handling it (shouldnt really be another option). i think its mind blowing they had this across all of their new line including their flagship model.

the smaller size was the biggest draw for me (assume itll feel alot better to carry than my tracker 2). im hoping that the fix is a real solution and trust it doesnt compromise the longetivity of the beacon. who knows at this point though.

Filled out the warranty/recall request on Friday and shortly thereafter I received confirmation that they received my message. Then I received a message that they were passing my submission along to the warranty department. Today I received another email asking me to fill out a form so they could send me a return shipping label.

It's progressing, albeit slower than I anticipated.

good to hear things are moving. i called mammut and have to say i was surprised when i was talking to a human in under 60 seconds. they looked up my order and confirmed that it will be inspected/repaired prior to being shipped. im not bothered by the delay of a few weeks so all in all minimal impact (again, as long as the repair lasts).

i did ask explicitly for a figure or more detail about what went wrong and how exactly they are fixing it and they just linked me back to the recall page which explains it but not in as much detail as i wanted. may follow up about that again.

Mammut customer service is pretty good. A couple years ago I had a faulty unit right out of the box. Quick and easy warranty replacement. Turned out that the unit hadn’t had the firmware loaded on it.
