My dad was also born in 1923 and missed the big show. He was finishing up Med School.

But he was in the middle of the shit in Korea, 8055 MASH.

Did some background reading and despite having superior ratings on his flight training, upon completion and the expectation of being deployed to a carrier group, he was one of seven assigned to do training exercises over the Atlantic. Have to wonder if his Indian heritage had something to do with the less stellar posting than he expected. Had no idea he grew up on a Res and was enrolled in Sioux nation

Whoa. Did not know that. Shitty if true (although nobody wants to go to war). Everyone who passes muster deserves a chance.

That said, he did ok for himself.

Good for him. Without knowing anything other than what I've seen on tv and youtube, Cary seems like a stand up guy. But honestly, I've haven't watched TPIR since I was a kid.

Another legend from the days when only really rich people had more than 5 channels to watch in the 1970s. When us boomers were out home "sick" from school this was about the only thing interesting mid day on a weekday. It was game shows or soap operas and soap operas were only entertaining if you could watch them every day.

My friend from High School, Danielle Riepole, dated Drew for a while. The only gossip I got was he loved getting snowballed.

Yup. My neighbor friend found this out when he was in college on the show. Won the showcase and a 2001 Chevy sedan and immediately had to bum 3k from his parents to collect the car. He immediately sold it back to the dealer for something like 20% under MSRP with zero miles on it. It was still super cool seeing my friend that I played street football and driveway basketball with on the show.

Other random fact: contestants as recent as the early 2000's were chosen solely on appearance, personality, and enthuisam levels while you're in line to get into the studio. There was a preference for in-uniform military and college kids repping their schools. Arrive dressed up and hyped if you want a chance at being on. It isn't randomly pulled names from the audience like you might believe.
Wait, how can we trust this guy^^^ He's clearly not DJSapp

so you're telling me that the big boobed women jumping up and down in excitement was part of the planning? Well played, Bob.

Skip to about 37:00 into the show. Just after the discussion on having 2 bids that were over and nobody won a showcase...

Happened with a lot of Naval Aviator’s in 1944/45. The US Navy had trained a huge number of pilots in anticipation of horrendous losses in the Pacific. Then the Battle Of The Philippine Sea happened in June 1944 (same month as D-Day on the opposite side of the world). It was the largest carrier vs. carrier battle in history, and the Japanese got slaughtered. The nickname for the air campaign was “The Marianas Turkey Shoot”. That engagement ended Japan’s effective use of carriers for the rest of the war, leaving the US Navy with tens of thousands of trained and qualified pilots waiting back in the states.

@ Harry, thanks for the perspective. Makes sense in that (IIRC my high school History), Japan's strategy was more in the shock and awe first strike category, and the Allies were already in a war of attrition.

Yep, but apparently Barker was trained and qualified well in advance of that battle.

So what. He was in the pipeline along with thousands of others. The pipeline just moved a lot slower than anyone expected.

Landing a Corsair on a carrier deck takes balls of steel, so huge respect for the man. But don’t embellish his service, he was just another GI.
