I'm surprised that very many people living in the desert don't know that it floods. Odds are you're living on an alluvial fan, which is another word for floodplain. Also, there seem to be relatively frequent floods in desert areas, so a minimum of paying attention to surroundings provides knowledge. Flash floods, debris on roads, washed out roads, etc.

Flood map shows a lot of 100-year flood in Palm Springs area, though not much in Palm Springs proper.

Those with homes or businesses in the 100-yr FP need to have flood insurance if they have a mortgage. It’d be interesting to see the Hilary flooding footprint overlaid with the 100 and 500-yr FP’s.

And ya, if the water is moving your car/truck/suv will be swept away with that water in anything over a foot.. maybe less if it's really churning..

Because this city is so hilly and the storm sewer system is basically “let’s put giant storm grates at the bottom of hills cause that’s where it’s going anyway” it tends to flash flood here with decent rainfall. On those days every electronic sign around is that exact phrase.

Still doesn’t stop the dumb-dumbs from getting stuck.

Also tires float. When you go offroading you often learn that one the hard way.

They float just enough until they catch something like a rock or curb or stump and then the car/truck flips over and you have dead people. And it's not a great way to go, trapped, drowning and getting beat to shit at the same time.

6.8 feet above average high tide for the big bend landfall area. That's nothing to turn your nose up at, and there's going to be a ton of damaging flooding, but in the big picture of tides and storm surges that really doesn't move the needle as much as the coverage would have led you to believe.

The family getting reports from the neighbor who rode it out in Cedar Key. Higher storm surge was considerably higher than Hermine -- so top surge in last ~20 years. Part of life for that small community.
