Torrey is more forgiving around the greens. You thin that layup three iron at Oakmont and you’re in bunker sixty yards short, with no chance of getting on the green in three.

Tiger and Rocco tied at 1 under that year... the rough was not forgiving. Also, I wasn't thinning 3 irons 60 yards short - lol... what?
My entire point, that you missed, is that the approach matters a ton. If you're trying to attack a course like that you can get chewed up vs. playing it super conservatively. Not an option for the pros, but for your average scratch golfer out there it depends on how capable they are of checking their ego.
Did the forum crap out during the 2023 PGA tour thread and that's why we're here? It's been non-functional for so long maybe I didn't notice.
I still call it The Jake.
My point is oakmont is much harder to play conservatively.
I’ve played both courses

Sure, you've played both courses but I don't think you're understanding how different Torrey was setup in June 2008 vs. how it normally plays (I've played it several times). There's a reason the winner was only 1 under... same as Oakmont this year.
Either you had the round of your life, or i am calling BS on this ridiculous claim.
FWIW, the USGA released a tool to estimate your score on one of their championship layouts. A 2 handicap would be targeting an 88 at this year's oakmont. I think i saw that 2008 Torrey actually rated slightly harder than oakmont, and was a Par 71. So, you would have shot at least 7 strokes better than your target score if you did shoot 82.

I shot 31 on the back 9 to finish 2 under once with a 12 HC. With golf, Anything is possible. That's why I love to play the game. It's like going to the casino.

I played well when I shot the 82 but it wasnt the round of my life by any means (that was a 65 at Silverado in Napa). Keep in mind that this is only several years after I was a plus handicap and playing competitively. I was a 2 at the time because I hadnt been playing as much around then - I dont really care if you dont believe me - talking about an 82 here - not like that is some crazy accomplishment. My friend who was scratch at the time shot an 80 so I wasnt even the lowest round in my group.</p>
yeah, while the internet is full of boasting, this place has routinely shown itself to be full of real experts, and you did start a golf clothing company FFS. I choose to believe you on anything golf related. Now, when it comes to basketball, that's a different story...![]()

I believe you. I cant shoot 82 these days from the whites but still have my sights on golfing my age and I no longer have to break par. Gets easier every year numerically.

I believe you. I think I shot 82 at Torrey, tipped out with a lot of really tough pins. A 2 hdc with a competitive background, is different than a guy that is scratch, but plays the same golf course, over and over. Have you ever qualified for any usga events?
I played in 2 US ams, one when I was 20 and again at 40.

Played in the US Am when I was [emoji637][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji639]]. It was not my week! By this point I was playing somewhat regularly with / against some guys who I thought might go pro (Johnny Miller’s son Andy, for example) and realized I was a dime a dozen anyway. Humbling sport. The guy who ranks [emoji637][emoji638][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]]]th on tour is so fucking good.
and scottie takes the lead in the open !
not suprised and not shocked. he may rival tiger for the best in this century but dam is he boring to watch, tiger was lively and had a serious determined look on the course, scottie looks like he is reading war and peace out there and much thanks to the pga crumbling to liv and giving its marquee players locks for half the seasons tournaments, a player getting hot over a few days and knocking scottie off in a tournament is even less.

Rival Tiger? Let's not be prisoners of the moment - he has a hell of a long way to go.
