Well, they’re literally well over a billion dollars in the red, so…

But if you want to put aside the money they paid to bring players over, well in that case they are… still not even close to profitable. You need real TV money and big time sponsors to cover those purses. I’m starting to think the PGA’s new strategy is to simply wait them out and see how much money the Saudis want to burn on this thing. I don’t know any serious golf fans who like the LIV format.

It’s been over a year now since the “merger” and negotiations started.

Talk about obtuse, couple billion to the Saudi’s is pocket change. The Saudi sports ventures are marketing campaigns. How much does Fedex spend on golf sponsorship? The Saudi marketing budget is orders of magnitude larger than some delivery service.

I've never seen a LIV tournament, and have no plans to try and find one
This brings back bad memories of Indy Car vs CART. Neither one really wins

If a shitty golf tournament falls in the forest and there’s no one there to hear it, does it make a sound?

Heading to my first PGA event Friday at Travelers - just "grounds" admission - Gonna play 9 early at local course then head over to TPC Cromwell solo - and wander around with a drink(s) while rocking my Swirlo - see what I see and just be "not at work" - till the PM storms come

Liv golf, in a golf tournament sense, is a complete joke. I’ve never watched it and never will. I’m old school as it gets. But to say that the PGA didn’t place restrictions on members regarding where and when they could play, for money, is just not correct.
For the run of the mill tour pro it doesn’t matter that much, but for the big name international guys it’s not that great a deal.

Your example of what Bryson did the week before is my point - the PGA would have been fine with that. The only time they've denied players access to other events is when a competing tour trying to disrupt their entire business model showed up. You do realize those WGC events that most of the top guys play in are not under their umbrella, right?

the pga is a joke too. travelers is the 8th signature event this year, 8th event where no one but the top players are allowed and they are playing for more money than the non signature events and who approved this to be started ? the pga players who already made it to the top. they shut out all sorts of season long chances for a guy to have one hot week and change his life forever.
i grant that liv isn't the same game as a pga 72 hole course and that liv isnt on the same level as the pga backed by the saudis and no indication that is has a lot a charitable outreach, but the pga and its top players that now have the control of the pga are just as greedy as the liv guys. that they have the best interests of the tour is laughable.

    ok, off soapbox.

good job by tom to get to a playoff. scottie is not tiger but a lot of guys have been tied with scottie and fallen off and then scottie wins it. there's gotta be some pressure to beat scottie in 2024 more than anyone else.

Yer not wrong with that rant I used to go to Hartford/Cromwell whatever and walk the course and watch these guys on Thursday and Friday. There was a much wider mix of players with lots of local club pros from around the region making it more of a community thing.

    ok, off soapbox.

There are dozens of tx's for the bottom half of the PGA to play in and earn $$$ that wouldn't exist w/out the top tier of players. The PGA can't write dozens of $50-200 million checks so they are trying to find a way to pay the best players who bring out the fans and get eyeballs on a screen, which supports the entire roster of players.

Tiger absolutely destroys Colin Montgomerie with this response to Colin suggesting he should just retire:

    Worth a watch.

It's hard for someone to know when to take the step back.
Especially when it's it's been your life fore ever.

People still go out to see him when he's in the field.
    He's a big draw.
And still better then 98% of the pros even with injuries and age.

Monty is a dumbfuck and always has been. Stay in your lane, loser.

Here’s the thing: all of the guys on tour have zero issue with Tiger still playing - because they’ve seen him striking the ball. He still has the skills and could probably win a tournament riding a cart. His body is still recovering so the idea that he should just hang it up is absurd. Looks like he’s been able to exercise a bit more in recent weeks - he’s coming into the Open looking a little more trim.

What I don't even understand is, why did Monty feel the need to even make the comment about Tiger? Is Tiger taking the space that would otherwise go to someone else? No he's not, because anyone with half a brain would know as a past Champion he's exempt (as Tiger eloquently pointed out). Now, let's see us some Big JD and Tiger putting green chatter.

I was at the PGA Championship at Valhalla this year. Biggest crowds on Thursday and Friday were following Tiger’s group. The man can still hit a golf ball. But with all of his difficulties, he can’t practice so it’s the little things that drive his score up (like most mortals). We didn’t follow him because of the crowds but still got a few up close looks at his shots. He is really good.

JT is your clubhouse leader so far. I always think its funny to turn on the TV for the Open and see guys going off at 6:15 or some other ungodly hour and the last group rolling in at 9pm.

I watched the first groups going off last night at 10:30pm PST. Woke up at 6am and watched more groups teeing off. Pretty funny.

Now that is funny. I think I heard they get something like 6+ hours of overnight darkness up there during the Summer.
