Alternative to the old wooden dowel ski rack?

I could probably fit all these on the lumber racks mentioned here in half the wall area
I’m confused. Wouldn’t the horizontal racks stick out from the walls further into the space and cramp the weight bench even more?

The rafter versions look great for summer storage but lifting them up and pulling them down regularly in the winter sounds like a hassle.

I need to explore these horizontal solutions you all have. The lumber rack two or three pair deep looks pretty good.
But problem with some of them (like that one ^^^) is access. How easy is it to grab those Volkl’s in the middle?

The problem with vertical against a wall is the bindings always seem to clash and take up too much room. Wasn’t a problem with an 8’ wall and a few pair…then I got more pairs…then my wife got more pairs…then my kids got more pairs and it started to look like this (which doesn’t include any of the race skis which are on a different wall). That’s a good point. Usually in the winter I pull the bench out a foot or two anyways to make grab and go easier. I just pushed it close to the wall yesterday..

I am lucky - I have the garage stairs so I am just packing them up the stairs and putting them away.

I was kicking around the idea of putting the platform on a pully like I have for the canoe and then attaching a cheap atv winch to the wall that I could use for lifting.

Then I decided that as soon as the kids move out I am buying land out side of town!

    .. with a shop
..... and a dedicated ski workspace that doesn't need to convert to bike workspace each year.

SO look at all the different solutions people have used and pick the one or parts of several that works for your space

I went cheap and vertical. Could work horizontal too if that tickles your fancy. It’s a 2x8, drilled 1 1/4 with a spade but, used a speed square to draw 45’s off the hole and cut with a skill saw. Then softened the edges with a router. It works for the quiver I have. I don’t feel like reaching up to grab stuff, cause I’m lazy. Click image for larger version.

Just some foam mat to make it softer than the concrete. Some of those rubber anti slip mats with the holes would be nice.

I need to go to Utah.
    Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?

So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....

You can make your own with scrap 3/4" plywood and a 3.5" hole saw and a 2" hole saw. Easy-peasy. If you want to get extra fancy, a Forstner bit to countersink the bolt on the 3.5" button. I had all of these tools so no cost.

Hadn't thought of the groove idea to hold tech binders...gotta figure out how to engineer that.

@Norseman (and all the other lumber-rack folk.)

Put some schedule 40 PVC on the horiz. bars and you can stack 3-4 wide, easy.
    1.5" I think fits snug. (It's either 1.5 or 125, but pretty sure it's 1.5")

My five shelf one fits 25+ pairs. (As you can see in the pics, I'm also stacking a couple of pairs on each other, but even without that, I get more than 20 pairs.

As for grabbing a pair in the middle...
If you don't fill the whole thing full and have a few spots above/below, you can pull a pair or two off the "shelf" you want, put them on a different one, grab the pair at the middle/back and put the others back.

It also helps if you alternate tips/tails from shelf to shelf. Then you can slide the middle row skis past without the bindings blocking the skis from the shelf above/below

I use the garage staircase too, most of the skis are leaning against the wall 1 or 2 to a step on the way up to the loft.

Recently got a 5 pack of the button hangers to try out and they're great. Mounted to an old Explosiv for extra style points.. Will probably get more and remount closer together to make better use of the space, but here's a shitty pic of the current setup. 😁

Alternative to the old wooden dowel ski rack?

From the other garage ski storage thread:

I find the height adjustability of the ceiling mounted racks useful. You can raise or lower depending on season to either get the skis out of the way or down for easier access.

Adding a rope through a padded pipe can either be added to the ceiling rack or simply used with ceiling hooks, eyebolts or lag screws, etc.

You could just hang pipes with rope. A pulley and boat cleat could be an add-on for raising and lowering.

Ideally, being able to place the skis on edges would help avoid water sitting on them and take the binding/ski weight off the camber.

One benefit of the dowels is they also work well for hanging ski poles along with other stuff like shovels and rakes.

    Excellent.

I'll do this for the upper levels. Low ones have to stay short to clear some other shit in my shop.

I put a 2x2 on a shelf bracket and can put 7-8 pair of skis in small space, over a shelf in my garage. Store the cargo box the same way.
