    Declining Skilled Trade

I’m one of the few that can talk to both sides; electrician by trade, electrical engineering degree and an MBA.

I’ve worked both trades, engineering construction, military and defence contracting in US, Canada and New Zealand/Australia.

The one consistent thing across all countries is the lack of unions, wage protection and demonisation of vocational AND academic education. It’s absolutely insane that we are not educating people to understand that pretty much all avenues have a similar net worth in a functioning society (except sociologist /s). There’s a supply and demand of roles in society and we seem to swing the pendulum so widely in one direction and then hammer that in as the only path to success.

I’ve made 6 figures in the trades, but I’ve also missed out on a lot of family things I wish I hadn’t. This is where good, democratically functioning and transparent unions come in. But those got all fucked up with capitalism slowly eroding away at wages and allowing this weird, individualistic pie in the sky dream to be rammed down our throats that everyone can be a millionaire. Would’ve been so much greater if we just focused on teaching “no, you’re not gonna be a millionaire but you can have one hell of a cool life”.

    Like.

I've posted this Finnish education system diagram in similar threads. It's all important and they seem to get it.

Somewhere along that windy road the Finns skipped graphic design…

We could debate what "similar" means, exactly, but hell yes. We need each other if it's gonna work.
