    Puncture Proof Tires

Has anyone seen these things? I was walking around in a big department store today, I saw these and had to check them out. They tured out to be essentially a thicker rubber, maybe 2X the normal tube. I'm no "Sprocket Rocket" just yet, so I figured I'd come to you guys for the truth on the subject.

I figure that if a screw is going into my tire, its gonna go in. Would the extra rubber have an effect, or because of the high pressure it wouldn't really matter unelss it was as thick as a car tire, then again screws go into car tires. Anyway, is there a true puncture proof tire/tube or what is the closest to it.

as far as i know, if there is air in the tire, it can puncture. if its that big of a problem, go to wal mart and get some of those ghetto foam things that you put inside. thatll make it like a run flat tire.

    end of stupid advice

the puncture proof tyre that i know surely works is the one they use at the world rally championship:

i doubt the ones you were looking at are the same, but the article should give you some idea of one possible solution.

Slow rolling, but no flats: http://www.airfreetires.com/

The better solution is Slime. It won't stop a puncture, but it'll seal it quickly when you pull the screw out.

Check out notubes.com as well. I know lots of people who use these, and they swear by them.

I allready found that site and shit my pants laughing.

No one really answered the question of would it matter if the tube was thicker than normal. Would that help at all?

I'm not sure about mountain biking, but for road biking, I haven't noticed a big difference. What does make a difference is Kevlar-belted tires. Not Kevlar bead, i.e. folding, but having a Kevlar layer under the rubber. I run them on my recumbent and they stop a large percentage of glass chips -- I pick them out of the rubber all the time.

Primo makes Kevlar-belted Comets for MTB-size rims. For road rims I think you can get Avocet FasGrips (if your bike takes wide touring tires). These are all slicks.

I don't know if there are any knobbies with Kevlar belts, and I don't know if it would do any good, either, because on an MTB you either pinch-flat (where Kevlar would make no difference) or run over big thorns (the Kevlar does have a limit).

    Thumbs up

When i used thorn resistant tubes and slime, i would get puntures constantly. I mean like 1 or more a week.

Now i have thin tubes, with tape, and i have not had a puncture yet.

Nah. Recumbents use lots of fat 26" tires. Primo K's here:

Thicker tubes help prevent pinch flats when running low pressure. Don't really make any differance to thorn resistance despite the claim. Adding a little talcum powder to the tube also helps a lot with this as it prevents the two binding.

If you have a problem with thorns/screws/glass whatever, slime would probably work much better.

See ghetto stans post if you are cheap. Get some 24" tubes cut them to act like a stan's rimstrip and follow the instructions on the stans website using his sealant. Alo watch his video where he punctures the tire with all kinds of stuff like huge nails and flathead screwdrivres and it seals right back up.
