We shook hands and he left. Such is life. And biz.

You never know when you might need to partner up with a friendly competitor in your field. Always good to walk away with a handshake.

I fired a guy who was handing out business cards to his side business while on my clock to my customers. His business failed and I hired him back.

He was losing his house because his wife maxed his credit cards and wasn't paying the mortgage. He told me the truth, we still talk.

He was desperate, some people suck, some are in a bad spot.

Listing to people can be worth the time. It might only be 30% of them but its worth it. My mistake is wasting a bunch of time on the ones who don't work out.

Never have a business that can't withstand the loss of a few people.

We are at a 54 year low in unemployment, if your job sucks, change it.
If you can't get people, change your company.
If you can't change your company, leave.
You sound like a decent human and boss to work for.

It is easy through this thread to see who is:

    1. a business owner.
    2. a decent level headed person.
    3. Who still lives in their parents basement posting "expert" opinions about Ukraine, COVID, the US economy, and US foreign policy. This subset has also never hired or fired a human in their lives, and it shows.

Yep. He left on good terms. It’s a small world.
I’d take him back if he agreed not to compete.
    That would require trust.
But he didn’t steal. He has his dream. Gotta try that before you’re too old.

I'm curious if he understood why he had to leave ?

I seen a few guys try that more or less and i don't think they made out better in the end but it was a very long way to the end and i don't know if they would have lasted

    Capitalism..

When you're wealthy your business is your capital, and frees you personally of economic and physical liability... Your company profits and benefits from the capital enhanced by the worker class.

When you're poor, your body is your capital, making you personally indentured to toil for the wealthy, wearing down your body, depreciating your capital (body) in the process..
Go that way really REALLY fast. If something gets in your way, TURN!
