That seemingly cobbled together pitching staff just shut down 2 of the better offensive teams of recent memory.

    Go Texas Corey Seagers!

Just a classic choke job by the Phillies. Brutal. For all the talk of the D Backs riding the hot team wave, it's really not that simple. The hot team generally doesn't get completely beat down in games 1 and 2 of the series. Bad managerial decisions and Kimbrel who has sucked for 6+ weeks now cost what should have been a sweep. Then the Phillies high priced talent played like dog shit swinging at a million low and outside sliders after Wheeler put them back in control with another drubbing in game 5.

Dbacks did what they needed to, but the HR or bust streak hitters going 0-Infinity vs a 5 ERA pitcher was simply embarrassing.

Philly pain....eagles leading at 1/2 time of superbowl....union losing in the mls finals on penalty kicks....sixers another early playoff exit....phillies ultimate choke job....flyers 3 years away from being 3 years towards something positive.

I'd like to think the Phillies' choke is indicative of what I've always believed: small ball beats long ball. If you have multiple guys that can hit for contact, you're more likely to get runs on the board in dry spells than if you're a feast-famine HR hitting team. Long ball works great in the regular season as you're facing 4-5 starters and more relievers, but in the Postseason against #1-2-3 and elite relief, you're in trouble if your bats can't find the distance, leading to tons of fly outs and strikeouts, which is what we saw from the Phils

it’s not like turner and harper can’t put the bat on the ball, they just came up 0-8 yesterday.

is there any proof for this small ball schtick?

to me it looks like good hitting teams usually manage to put a few over the fence at the same time. the phillies had a slightly higher avg than the snacks fwiw (and got on base a lot more).

    simplistic AF: show your work.

the Dbacks pitchers owned 2 elite line ups

Betts, Freeman and Harper are all in top 5 of OB% in the NL Harper hit .293 this year
Castelanos & Turner from PHI had over 170 hits this season, they arent just bangers. Sure Schwarber had 47 HR but he had 104 RBIs, Phillies were getting guys on base and getting them around. Just not the last few games....

The reality is that all of the teams in the playoffs are good to great, and the variance from game to game is MUCH greater in baseball than in, say, basketball. A good team is going to win a 7 game series against a great team pretty frequently in baseball, the difference just isn't that pronounced and baseball has too much variance game to game and pitch to pitch.

Not even close to accurate. Teams that hit more home runs are 21-4 so far this year in the playoffs. Long ball and pitching high velo play at every level of baseball, from 8U to the World Series.

My theory is that teams with players named Pham beat other teams in every playoff series. To date in 2023, my theory has at least as much validity as yours, if not more.

The HoF announced the 10 finalists for this year's Ford C. Frick Award and if Tom Hamilton doesn't finally get in, especially after this incredible call, then the fix is in for someone truly awful, like Joe Buck.

I mean, this is one of the greatest calls in baseball history, much less last year.

I still call it The Jake.

If the fox guys doing the music out to and back from commercial were as cool as they used to be, they would fire up Choctaw bingo by James McMurtey with all the Choctaw Casino signs
