Apologies if this is a little off topic, but it's kind of a cool baseball story about a pretty good ski racer and his long-time baseball team making a trip to upstate, so hopefully not too far off?

My nephew and his team of PDX kids (allegedly including all the POC in town per TGR lore) have been playing baseball together for almost 10 years. With all the ups and downs you'd expect through ages 7-15. I've got a bunch of triumphant VMs and lately they've won some tournaments before each season ends on a heartbreaking nail-biter that doesn't quite go their way. But last week the tables turned: they staged a late comeback to win a 1-run final game for the regional title and a spot in the Babe Ruth World Series for 13-15 year olds. In a couple of weeks they head for Jamestown, NY--that is upstate, right? Do I ask for tarp pics? What's the right age-appropriate memorabilia for a first-timer?

He's one of my favorite ski buddies and not an actual maggot, but last winter he picked up a pair of boots I bought from TBS, and I was kinda stoked about the quirky little life lesson in karma points or whatever that is when we cart stuff around because we're going that way. He's a competitive but humble kid, so it's pretty awesome to see him knock in some RBIs and help his team get the big win after all these years.

The team's super excited and on to fundraising so they can all make the trip. Pics and story from a small paper.

Couple $ links in case anyone is interested: the Portland Pickles will throw them a couple bucks when people buy tickets for Monday's game here, and they've got a gofundme that's off to a decent start.

Not quite as good as a George Brett story, but hey, kids and sticks--and balls.

    SO much trade deadline talk.

I do not want Verlander. Fuck that guy.

Kershaw would punch him in the nose Day 1.
2017, he knew, he watched one of the few pitchers on the planet on his level get cheated out of Ks, outs and likely wins. Fuck him

Clayton Kershaw in the 2017 World Series:

    At Dodger Stadium:
    11IP, 1ER, 3BBs, 15Ks, 0.82 ERA

    At Minute Maid Park:
    4.2IP, 6ER, 3BB 2Ks, 6.50 ERA

Cheating fucks, every one of them including Verlander. Let him suffer out his career where he is.

The Mets are paying half of Verlander's contract for him to go win the Astros a WS. And what did they get back, some low ranked scrub. The Mets FO is more lost than the Yankees and it should also go mentioned that NOBODY hates the Yankees more than Yankees fans right now.

The Yankees are 84-80 since the 2022 trade deadline and since then, players not named A Aron have hit /.

So all last season and hot stove when fans were begging for some offensive help, the FO was smarter than everyone because the pieces were already there.

Gonna be the first last place finish since the Andy Hawkins Steve Sax squad in 1990.

As a Mets fan, I don't hate the trades they have made, though I hate that they were in a position to make me not hate them

The Josh Bell era in Cleveland is over. Thankfully.

It's not often I can criticize the front office for their signings/trades, but that one was a total clunker. Good luck in Miami Josh.

Neat. The Guards just got no-hit by the Cheaters on a day when they entered a game out of 1st place in the Central, but totally demoralized by the front office's moves with an eye on the future.

    This should sit well.

    Oof. That’s tough.

It’s still wild to me that the worst team in the AL East is better than any team in the central.

Tito was very uncharacteristically annoyed in his presser last night. At who? Not sure, but Athletic beat writer Zack Meisel took the brunt of his emotions when Tito said these moves aren't landing well in the locker room when they're competing for the Division, despite how bad the Division may be.

Right? Just ask Jose Ramirez or Marty Brennaman. Savage in his love for both.

Seeing myself being set up for disappointment again by a Dodgers team I absolutely love.

Good series, Braves shut down Shohei at the plate (as much as is possible). Too bad he didn't get to pitch.
I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

his swing looks so effortless (and a lot of arm action), it's amazing how much power he can generate.

    Talk about mother fucking baseball?

just got tix to day game @ Fenway, last Sunday of the summer.
A contending Dodgers team vs a Red Sox team likely needing a victory to stay in the playoff hunt. Kike, Mookie, JD Martinez, Dave Roberts all coming back to Fenway
    Hope Verdugo plays too

9 yo son has never been to Fenway, NH raised wife hasnt been in years but still supports the sox in theory

    Awesome Woodsy, happy for y’all.

Bravos are really good at baseball. And Josh Naylor and company may have told their front office to fuck off when they traveled to Houston on a mission of mercy to address the team after holding a fire sale (all justifiable moves btw) when they’re only a game out of first (in the shittiest division in baseball)

That’s my takeaways from baseball this week.
