There's no way I'd buy something without wheels.

Also no way I'd pay $250 for a glorified cardboard box.

Fair, though they have wheels you can attach.
Been using a glorified duffle bag for years without wheels and generally w/o damage - though I spend a lot of time prepping the bikes. Wondering if the handlers treat "boxes" better than duffels. Have looked at some of the more robust bags and the added weight is a bummer when trying to stuff in all the bike packing gear as well.

I’m leaning toward cardboard box if it’ll cut down weight. Sure I’d feel different if I was a roadie, but mtb can take the abuse. I’m tired of the weight anxiety and knowing I might have to start wrenching parts off at checkin.

Having used cardboard boxes a few times for bike travel I can confirm they do not. Boxes showed up mangled. Fortunately the bike was ok each time.

Bags are a lot easier to maneuver than boxes. Better handles, wheels, etc. I'm sure baggage handler's treatment of them reflects how much of a pain in the ass they are.
