    Olympus Slabs 9-13-05

Climbed the north facing Olympus slabs with Powstash today.

    Kendall on the lower face.

    Being a dork.

    Powstash spicing it up.

Mmmmm, 1,000ft of 5.5 quartzite slab fun.

The locals were out in force.

Powstash heel hooking the dork crux.

He then barely stuck the dyno for the tree.

Got up to the ridge and scrambled to the multiple north summits.

    SLC looming as always.

    Ridge runnin.

The obligatory tourist point at downtown SLC and the lake it was named after.

Powstash, late for work again. Seems he always is when we get out for dawn patrols.

    Downclimbing past a rappel station.

Powstash got sick of downclimbing and just hucked it.

Both Powstash and Xover are spancered by Dan's Bakery. Powstash enjoying his spancership on the south summit.

The face is 'skiable'. But it is a once every five years kind of thing. If it's in shape, it'll get done.

    Looks like fun

(and hoping the rock will still be dry in Wales next month.)

Funny, I seem to remember using rope on two of the 12 or so pitches going up that thing...and being very happy to have it...

PS: This photo defies both logic and sanity.

Yeah, that's what I thought. He wasn't psyched on the last 10ft of downclimbing. He just stepped up to the edge and said "I'm hucking off here". I got the camera out just in time.

Funny cause that's what Trackhead said about the climbing. It was pretty rare to be climbing along, just chatting and commenting on the rock and the holds when you're used to sitting at a belay station wondering what's taking so long and not being able to chat with your climbing partner. This type of climbing was really enjoyable.

since we were climbing sans rope we figured you'd be more comfy in bed that early in the morning

    I still love you man

The approach up the gully is almost surreal.

Since it can be done in tennis shoes and with girls...

I'd think a motivated person could do it by their self.

Nice TR. Done it many times, but I usually simul-climb. You guys definitely have more confidence than I, not even wearing harnesses to use in an emergency. Is that belay station dropping down to the saddle? I can't imagine my webbing has faded to that color.

Awesome pics Nice ambition for a dawn patrol. I do know some that have done it alone and one nut that skied it solo one morning

You're giving me some motivation, maybe I can convince skiingbear to get it done before the snow really flies.

B-rad? Didn't he have the first descent?

I would love to lay tracks down it in the right conditions, which are pretty hard to come by with these warm winters.

I swear I saw tracks down it last winter. It seemed like there were at least a few days where it was good to go.
